About this deal

As Preventive Vet's dog behavior expert and lead trainer at Pupstanding Academy, Cathy focuses on helping humans and their pets build a strong relationship based on trust, clear communication, and the use of positive reinforcement and force-free methods. With over 13 years of experience, she has had the opportunity to work with hundreds of dogs on a wide variety of training and behavior issues. Beyond her one-on-one consultations through Pupstanding Academy, she also teaches group dog training classes at Seattle Humane. Her specialties include dog aggression, resource guarding, separation anxiety, and puppy socialization. That being said, as much as many out there don’t want to admit it, there are dog breeds that were bred for fighting or aggressive protection purpose. These fights can often be broken up by making a loud noise, using water or citronella spray, or by physically separating the two dogs. Spray citronella spray directly into the nose and mouth of the biting dog. The smell and taste can get them to release their bite. When they release the bite, immediately move the dogs away from each other, staying in control position until they are secured.

Dog fights can be very scary when they happen. Our usual instinct is to scream and run into the fight hands-first to pull the dogs apart. But doing so could lead to severe injuries to both yourself or further injury to the dogs involved. Most dog fights are mostly snarling and snapping – there is a lot of noise but not much damage done. Almost all of these dogfights are easily ended with loud noises (shouting or air horns). However, if you invite a dog to come to your house and your personal dog bites the guest’s dog, you are at fault because you invited that dog and had a duty to make the home safe for your invited party.Immediately separate dogs in their own secure areas. This allows you time to evaluate whether either or both dogs need veterinary care. Any puncture wounds — even small ones — or lacerations in the skin require veterinary care as soon as possible to prevent infection. If the puncture is not bleeding profusely, you are able to flush and bandage it, you may be able to avoid an emergency veterinary visit and instead go to your regular veterinarian for care. If you’re a new dog owner, begin socializing your puppy and teaching your dog acceptable interactions. It’s a good idea to work with a professional on this front if you’ve never socialized a puppy before! Through this key learning time, puppies should learn that biting is inappropriate, and neither is “rude” behavior towards strange dogs. As a dog owner, the best thing you can do in the meantime is to prevent dog fights from happening in the future. Bite gloves (see a variety of bite gloves available through ACES – I personally use the Humaniac™ V-Pro Animal Handling gloves because of the dexterity it allows me). Do not put yourself between the fighting dogs. If you do, you are basically asking to have the bites redirected towards you and risk being severely injured.

Be careful, though. Pepper spray can affect the entire scene, and everybody close would get their eyes burning. Only use that as a last resort if the aggressor dog has a rich history of biting and is actively charging at your dog. A growling/barking dog isn’t an excuse to use such extreme measures. I also like to use citronella spray for these fights – it’s easier to aim, meaning you won’t scare the crap out of the rest of the dogs in the vicinity! It is best if there are two people to break up a fight, but you can do it by yourself if you have no choice. If both dogs are fighting and you are alone, you might need to tie one of the dogs to something solid. When one of the dogs is tied up, you must "break" the one that is not tied first, and pull him/her off right away.Dog bites happen for a variety of reasons, sometimes the dog is provoked or scared, or other times the dog is simply aggressive.

Every dog owner should know how to break up a dog fight in a way that is not only safer for them but also will help prevent worse injuries to a dog. Dogs teeth and jaws are so strong that they can easily cause serious injury to you if you try to intervene at the wrong times. If a dog has grabbed onto another dog with their bite, whether your own canine or someone else’s, there are a few techniques you can promptly utilize to release the bite. Some breeds of dogs are more predisposed to biting than others, but this doesn’t mean an individual dog will. What matters the most is the dog’s upbringing and training. As such, even the most aggressive dog breed can act ideally given the proper treatment.

Dog Breeds That Require a Break Stick

In the control position, you have control over the dog's body with your legs and of their head with your hands. This helps prevent redirected bites to yourself and makes it difficult for a dog to attempt further bites to the other dog once separated. Preventing their dog from damaging someone else’s personal property (dogs are considered property, so a dog biting another dog falls under this requirement)
