About this deal

As long as the golden occupation condition is met on EITHER the Construction OR the Critter, the Critter can be played using a golden occupation token." Everdell is now a very vast game, there are so many big box expansions, and the collectors box that holds all the content is the size of a small car. But this one Newleaf is my favourite expansion, I might even go so far to say that it could be considered the essential expansion if there can be said to be one. Basic Gameplay Everdell: Newleaf is one of the two expansions released for Everdell in 2022, bringing the total number of Everdell expansions to five! That’s a lot of game content to sift through as a new buyer looking for the next step. We’re here to give our thoughts on Newleaf so you can decide if it’s right for you. Since we’re going to be talking about a game expansion, we’re not going to go into too much depth on Everdell itself. We want to focus on what’s new in, well, Newleaf! The Station space that allows you to discard Meadow/Station cards, refresh, and draw is a great way to cycle through the cards that are available and get a resource from the train car that you really need. I really like the addition of the visitor cards as a way to score points at the end of the game. It’s a nice way of spreading out the points for meeting other conditions besides just the basic or special event cards.

Everdell offers something for everyone; it is an easy to learn and accessible board game, making Everdell Standard Edition an excellent choice for new players, while The Complete Collection offers increased complexity, depth, and strategy for long-time gamers. If you have been looking for a board game for kids, there’s even My Lil’ Everdell! If you are looking to bring a bit more variation to lower player count games of Everdell, then Newleaf is really a need rather than a recommend. This expansion brings the station which gives you new focus to gain big points other than the basic and special events, as well as three more station places which behave like the meadow so you will have more choice as the game goes on. A new mechanic on all Newleaf cards allows more freedom when playing Critter into a Construction through the use of golden occupation tokens. For instance, a Critter from Newleaf may be able to be played into any Green Production construction, no matter what it is. Each player only has three golden occupation tokens, so you can’t rely on freely playing Critters wherever - you’ll still need to plan your plays. This is balanced in a way that allows Newleaf cards to integrate easily with the base cards while still requiring strategy and planning. There are broadly speak two “flavours” of cards. These are the construction cards and the critter cards. Construction cards are generally more expensive, and cost resin, pebbles and/or wood to build. The critter cards will always cost berries. Generally you will find these a little easier to come across than perhaps pebbles, but I will say that scarcity of resources is a constant feeling when playing Everdell! These could be things like an ongoing discount of a berry when playing critter cards, or perhaps gaining two twigs each time you activate the green cards in your city. Over four seasons, players place their forest animal meeples to get resources to buy cards into a personal tableau, which give points towards winning the game or special abilities to help them build further. [2] The game starts simply, with the complexity increasing as a player's cards gain synergies from newly acquired cards. [3] In addition to the points they get from acquiring cards, players score by triggering events, from special events, from collecting certain combinations of card types, and from end game bonuses given by cards for acquiring certain other cards in their city. [4] [5] Reception [ edit ] Components of the gameThe components and artwork in Everdell are always brilliant. And so, Everdell Newleaf does not disappoint. This game comes with a deluxe velvet bag which is quite honestly a bit superfluous, but so is that beautiful Everdell tree, so I am here for it. This game offers a new board that sits to the right of the main board and it has the same beautiful graphic design that we have come to expect. Replayability One thing that did throw us off was the rules section explaining how to use Newleaf Critters/Constructions with golden occupation tokens. There are several examples in there, but all of them are concerning a base game card and a Newleaf card interaction, never a Newleaf-Newleaf interaction. Just adding a sentence like this would have cleared the whole thing up: Not sure what game to buy next? Buy a premium mystery box for two to four great games to add to your collection! Buy Premium Box » Critters and Constructions on the Station can be played to your city just like cards in the Meadow. However, beside each Station card is a corresponding train car tile. When you play a card from the Station, you also gain the benefit on the train car tile, usually resources, but sometimes points! Then the tile is discarded and a new one is drawn from a bag. Everdell is a board game for 1 to 4 players designed by James Wilson and published by Starling Games in 2018. In the game, players take the role of forest animals building a city over four seasons by collecting resources, recruiting workers, and constructing buildings. The game has been well regarded by reviewers, with its art and components receiving strong praise.
