About this deal

The all-around reflectors and number plate holder have been introduced to satisfy new laws in Germany. Recently, e-scooters are officially able to use the roads, and both of these features are required.

Before diving into the review, we must stress that it’s illegal to ride a personal e-scooter on both roads and pavements in the UK. You’re only permitted to ride them on private land with the landowner’s permission. The government has recently legalised the use of rental e-scooters in some UK cities, with a view to reducing traffic congestion on shorter journeys. While there is an ongoing bid to legalise private e-scooters, they remain illegal for now.

The 250W motor on the 1S is almost completely silent; so silent in fact that I had to use the bell on more than a few occasions because pedestrians couldn’t hear me approach even when I was less than two feet behind them. The pneumatic tyres provide great grip on every road surface, but you will notice slight jarring if the terrain gets rough. This is a great scooter for those thinking of replacing public transport or even a bicycle with something smaller, more convenient and easier to stash in a flat or office. It offers a great mix of performance, durability and comfort at a price that won’t break the bank. Some people believe that the box their scooter arrives in will tell them if their Xiaomi scooter is real or not, and this is true to a certain extent. Fake scooter boxes can look quite realistic, but they tend to be brown (when the Xiaomi 1S and Xiaomi Pro 2 scooter boxes are white). They also rarely cover all the bases. For instance, an authentic Xiaomi (or Segway) box has a lot of detail, including the hazmat warning sign (for the battery). Below is the box for the 1S. The Pro 2 box looks very similar, but the Essential comes in a brown box. The 250W motor gives the scooter a maximum speed of 25 km/h . Under ideal conditions, you have a range of 30 kilometres on a full battery. The front and rear of the scooter are equipped with lights, with the rear light also serving as a brake light.

We would always recommend wearing a helmet when riding an electric scooter. Most scooter injuries seem to happen when a pothole (or similar) is encountered and the smallish wheels are indeed susceptible to such obstacles. Please read my post Are Electric Scooters Safe? for more information and statistics on the safety of electric scooters. As we often point out, as of May 2022, it is not legal to ride privately owned electric scooters on public roads in Britain, although few police forces take any action against riders. Promoted at Xiaomi’s launch event with the strapline ‘ride the last mile’, the 1S is aimed at commuters and short trips; however, it’s capable of a lot more than that. Let’s dive straight into the 2021 Xiaomi Mi 1S review, which includes a comparison of the new 1S v the M365.The Essential's handlebars also differ, inasumuch as they are foam instead of thermoplastic rubber.

The Xiaomi Mi 1S is powered by a front-wheel 250W (up to 500W maximum) motor, that’s ample enough power for commuting and everyday use. And there’s plenty enough ability to handle up to 14% gradient hills and carry a maximum load of 100kg. The Xiaomi 1S features a 280 Wh NE1003-H Lithium ion battery. You can fully charge an empty battery within 5.5 hours . Xiaomi guarantees 500 charges with more than 70% power retention. The Xiaomi 1S electric scooter is far from being the perfect scooter, but the best thing about it is that you get what you pay for, along with a little more. The Xiaomi 1S is a foldable electric scooter designed by Chinese tech giant Xiaomi (pronounced "show-er-me"). It is manufactured by Ninebot, who also manufacture their own e-scooter (the Segway branded ES2). Like the M365, it has a simple folding design, 30 km (18 mile) range, 25 km/h (16 mph) top-speed, low weight and pneumatic tyres. It also boasts cruise control, front and rear lights, E-ABS brakes and a dedicated phone app (the Mi Home app seen below). The frame is also basically the same as the M365. The Xiaomi tyres are 8.5 inches in diameter and pneumatic. The idea is that air-filled tyres make the ride smoother. However, there is no suspension so it is really a trade-off between the two options. Xiaomi claim that their new range ( Essential, 1S and Pro 2) have "next generation tyres", making them three times as robust (less likely to puncture) as the M365 tyres. I cannot vouch for the robustness (I never had a puncture on my M365) but I have ridden M365s in Mexico City, where road repairs fall fairly low down on the "to-do" list, and found that, as long as major potholes are avoided, and a comfortable riding stance taken, most road surfaces can be comfortably traversed. Unsurprisingly, cobble stones present a problem.

What’s New?: Xiaomi Mi 1S v M365 Comparison

As mentioned, there is also a difference in the top speed of the scooters. The Essential has a top speed of 20 km/h (12 mph), whereas the 1S and Pro 2 have a top speed of 25 km/h (16 mph). As with the M365 Pro, the Pro 2 also has red trim on the front wheel. However, it is differentiated from the M365 Pro by the yellow reflectors, which are also found on the Essential and 1S (there has been confusion over whether the 1S will sport yellow because the original Chinese version of the Xiaomi 1S kept the red). All above data was obtained from Ninebot labs. Actual results may vary based on differences in use conditions.
