Its name was "Bittersweet Symphony" and it was a masterpiece. The orchestral sample builds meticulously from a tentative opening to a tumultuous crescendo in the closing seconds, accompanied by a smashing drum machine which mirrors the vicious social philosophies reflected in the lyrics perfectly. There's a tangible sense of desperation as the song progresses and the vocal symphony become increasingly prominent. It only managed #2 in the UK's charts, but it will forever live on in fans' hearts as the single that made Ashcroft's band, The Verve, hit it big. London: Guinness World Records Limited The Verve then took to the States to tour their first album. However, the tour itself was one of many complications, with Ashcroft being hospitalised after drinking himself into dehydration and Salisbury being detained for destroying a hotel room when out of his mind on drugs. Ashcroft would later claim: “At the start, it was an adventure, but America nearly killed us”.

[52] The song was a moderate success in Europe, charting at No.16 in the European chart (with 6 weeks in the Top 20). " Rather Be", the second single from the album, was released in November but did not become as successful as "Love Is Noise" was, peaking at number 56 on the UK Singles Chart. Soon after their commercial peak, The Verve disbanded in April 1999, citing internal conflicts. [8] According to Billboard magazine, "the group's rise was the culmination of a long, arduous journey that began at the dawn of the decade and went on to encompass a major breakup, multiple lawsuits, and an extensive diet of narcotics". [9] During an eight-year split, Ashcroft dismissed talk of a reunion, saying: "You're more likely to get all four Beatles on stage." [8] The band's original line-up reunited in June 2007, embarking on a tour later that year and releasing the album Forth in August 2008, which spawned the hit single " Love Is Noise". Amid revived tensions, the band broke up for the third time in 2008 following their performance at V Festival. [10] History [ edit ] Formation and Verve (1990–1992) [ edit ] Most people will be familiar with the seminal ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ and ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ (the latter a devastating paean to memories of Ashcroft’s dying father) but there is beauty and wonder everywhere – from ‘Sonnet’ and ‘Velvet Morning’ to cuts that should never be overlooked like ‘Lord I Guess I’ll Never Know’ and ‘Come On’.
