About this deal

The Continental Grand Prix 5000 is the successor of the hugely popular Grand Prix 4000 series that has dominated the high-end road bike tire market for the last 10 years. The GP 4000 became this popular because it was a true all-round tire that provided good enough grip, good durability, and good puncture resistance while still providing a very low rolling resistance.

Schwalbe’s Pro One TT tyre (seen here in a 700 x 25c size) is lighter and more delicate than the GP5000 S TR, but is designed purely for time trials. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media With the previous model already significantly improved in comparison to the old GP4000 S II model (17% in rolling resistance, 25% in puncture resistance), the GP5000S TR raises the bar in the allround road tyre market to previously unseen levels! These measurements will give us valuable information about how the tires behave over their entire life cycle. Tread pattern is considered by many as a sugar pill, designed to instill confidence whilst letting compound do the real work. However, Continental's research at its Korbach HQ still supports the approach. It took me quite a lot of time to reach the 620 miles / 1000 km this time around. A long time knee injury that seems to get worse in colder weather played a big part in this. Then came COVID-19 which

After 1240 miles / 2000 km, the tires still look good but they have now lost their new tire look. The front tire looks best as the tread hardly wears. The rear 32-622 is now starting to show some wear in the middle of the tread. If you’re mounting the GP5000 S TR on hookless rims, it’s worth noting Continental states the maximum inflation pressure on such rims is 73psi / 5.0bar, for all tyre sizes, as mentioned earlier. The tyre also features an elastomeric layer that Continental has dubbed Active Comfort. This claimed to improve vibration damping and improve comfort without affecting speed. A tyre can skim over tarmac like a knife to butter, but it'll leave you with bloody thumbs and a lot of rage if you can't fit it by the roadside. Better weather now arrived and I should be able to start improving both in miles/week and average speed.

In this updated version of our guide to Continental tyres we've added the new Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR. Because the general thinking is that rolling resistance of a tire decreases as it wears, and our results are so counterintuitive, we've performed extra tests that we think proof our results are correct. However, progress is being made, with Continental and other rim and tyre manufacturers sitting on a board that aims to define a standard within the next year or so. I fitted the clinchers to a pair ofPrime Carbon RR38 disc wheels, and unfortunately the process was accompanied by thumb skimming and swearing. Lighter, Faster and with stronger sidewalls... The new standard in road tubeless ready technology - now compatible with hookless rims.

The rear 32-622 takes a bigger load which results in bigger deformations as the tire rolls and its the deformations that wear the tire out from the inside. As the rubber and casing are deformed more and more, it loses its ultra-low rolling resistance properties.

The tubeless GP 5000 is available in 25, 28 and 32mm widths, plus a 28mm wide 650B version. Our samples of the 25mm versions weighed an average of 302g each; we've seen reliable reports of 295g samples too. That's heavier than some comparable tubeless-ready tyres (a 25mm Schwalbe Pro One weighs about 255g) because Continental has gone for a fully tubeless construction with an airtight rubber layer on the inside. The aerodynamics of the tubeless model didn't come up trumps, either, when AeroCoach compared a GP 5000 25mm clincher with a 23mm clincher, and a 25mm tubeless. Last time out, we hoped rolling resistance would have reached a point of stabilization. Unfortunately, what we see is one of the biggest increases in rolling resistance since the start of this test. We've now reached the point where rolling resistance has increased by ~20% and our once low rolling resistance tire now is only a mediocre tire. Foldable and 10% lighter than its predecessor, it reduces friction by 12% to offer a higher level of comfort and performance on the road. In addition, the Vectran Breaker technology provides 20% better protection against punctures. We've already done a test with a pair of worn Grand Prix 4000S II that was sent in by a reader who used them for 5000 miles / 8000 km. Because we received a lot of comments about This time around, total time on the bike was much shorter because the weather improved and a long-time knee injury didn't torture me as much.
