About this deal

However, this time, I sided with her completely and still felt so uncertain about Anna and how she acted. I found myself thinking about certain scenes as I was trying to sleep at night, thinking of the what ifs, the hows and the whys, and again, I couldn’t help but think about Emily; the continuous drama, the traumatic events that have happened so suddenly in her life so far that it’ll affect her for the rest of it. If you haven’t read her work before, I recommend not starting here but with The Flight and then check out the earlier books. On first meeting Emily senses they may have met before, Anna smiles in the Hope something twigs but gets nothing.

I enjoyed reading about the family dynamics and the character’s backstories which explained how they reached this point in the story. All You Ever Wanted is a thoughtful and multi-layered plot packed with dark touches and brimming with emotion. While there’s nothing to really make this books stand out from the crowd, it’s a good example of its type. All You Ever Wanted is packed full of menace and danger, and deftly exposes the fragility of family life.

Brought in an airport on New Year’s Day, I’d didn’t need a gruesome difficult thriller, and I certainly wasn’t given one! I was keen to see how Anna would use this new information to her advantage, her cunning ways and clever mind always full of surprises, always one step ahead. All You Ever Wanted is a change of genre for the author as it's more of a psychological thriller and it took me a while to get used to the author writing in this genre. Whilst her marriage does appear strong and loving, she's never really forgiven herself, or her husband Simon about how their relationship began. Emily doesn't have the greatest relationship with her own mother, and determined that her daughter Bonnie will not feel the same way about her. There was something so out of place, something that, if not dealt with, could well and truly destroy Emily’s life. The plot had me constantly thinking, the feeling of knowing something wasn’t right was so satisfying and impressed me more with each passing chapter. When a strange woman turns up on Emily’s doorstep with their lost cat, she doesn’t think anything of it. The plot was fairly predictable from early on (no spoilers but it’s about family ties, separation and how lives diverge).

She has a challenging relationship with her adoptive mother and has felt increasingly isolated from her old friends since marrying her husband Simon. We’re introduced to Emily who is 5 foot 3 (my name is Emily and I’m also 5 foot 3, weird) and her husband, Simon. The author gives the main character a sense of vulnerability as she has drifted away from her friends, so it makes sense that she instantly latches onto the helpful Anna. T J Emerson, author of The Perfect Holiday 'With her taut writing and immaculate pacing, Susan Elliot Wright has created a dark and sinister tale of toxic family relationships, full of secrets and lies, layered with a perfect example of the smothering isolation felt by so many new mothers. There’s one question that will be forever on my mind after reading the ending chapter, but I quite like the fact that we’ll never know the answer. This is a powerful book about a woman (Emily) slowly eroding through a drip-drip of poison both from outside forces and her own paranoia which may or may not be justified. I knew this book would be good, but I didn’t realise how much I’d love it and how much it would take over my brain space! I do prefer the author's previous work but this is still a strong addition to this genre and I'd recommend it. However, Anna may not be all that she appears to be and as the story progresses, the reader certainly becomes aware of darker motives on Anna's part. This is the story of Emily mum of 1 year old Bonnie and wife of Simon Unknown to Emily Simon was already engaged to someone else when she met him.

There was no slowing down as Emily and Simon do what they need to do to put things right, to save what is left of their family. It frustrated me as much as Emily that she wasn’t being taken seriously when something goes terribly wrong. Emily does the one thing that could potentially cause trouble if my suspicions about Anna were correct; tells her all about how she and Simon got together, about the issues it caused and how Emily still feels about it all. There was so much to explore in this book, the chapter endings always forcing me to read another chapter, and then another.I would definitely be interested in a sequel to this book, but in many ways it was the perfect ending. Are her thoughts out of control or is that annoying low-level niggle that something is very wrong in her life when everything appears to be right, a true indicator?
