About this deal

Battle: In Shatterpoint, players use their characters' special abilities and diverse combat skills to control the flow of battle as they race against each other to complete dynamically evolving mission objectives. Out of nowhere, Atomic Mass Games (AMG) announced a new skirmish-level Star Wars miniatures game yesterday, but what will that mean for Legion? I’ve been informed by my superiors that I’m once again on thin ice and they seemingly deleted most of my review of the 2003 novel, so I guess I’ll talk about this new minis game instead. What is Shatterpoint? (the actual answer) Mace Windu is a living legend: Jedi Master, skilled diplomat, and devastating fighter. But he is also a man of peace—and for the first time in a thousand years, the galaxy is at war.

But wait – why are we talking about Marvel Crisis Protocol when this was supposed to be about Shatterpoint? Well, Star Wars: Shatterpoint is being made by the very same team that gave us Marvel Crisis Protocol, and so far, it looks like it’ll feature the same level of accessibility combined with a serious deep dive into its setting that everyone loved about Marvel Crisis Protocol. Legion is an immensely popular game. Though true data is hard to come by, owner interviews have suggested that it’s in the top 5 of miniatures games fairly consistently and the online fanbase seems to grow every day ( including our Patreon by the way, IS THIS ENOUGH FOR YOU JAY?!). This fact means a couple things. First, it means that there are a lot of fans, and math being math at least a certain percentage of those fans are going to be somewhat prone to anything ranging from mild concern to actual anger upon hearing news that there is going to be a new minis game in town that covers A LOT of the same ground as their favorite game, which they have spent hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on and poured dozens of hours into painting. I’ll be candid, the initial emotion I had myself was more like…annoyance.

Bo-Katan and Clan Kryze

Name and Unit Type (bottom) – this shows what the character is called, and what role it plays. This section also displays its Unique Name (the name at the very bottom) of which no two can be taken in a game, meaning that you can’t for example, include two different versions of Ahsoka Tano with different unit types in a squad. Identity abilities only occur on Primary Units and happen on a triggering condition just like Reactive abilities, such as the Sith Assassin ability on Ventress pictured above The Sith Lord Darth Caedus used this ability to destroy the beskar-forged armor of the Mandalorian Protector Roegr. By tapping the breastplate lightly with the hilt of his lightsaber, Caedus was able to completely shatter the armor. When Caedus was still Jacen Solo, he destroyed the blasters of several Centerpoint guards merely by exerting Force pressure in the weak points. Luke Skywalker revealed that he too could perceive shatterpoints, and taught this to Jaina Solo. [2] [9] Combat is my favorite system in the game, though it isn’t without it’s pitfalls. It makes the most sense to explain it via an image, so take a second to look at Darth Maul’s double-sided combat card.

Will of the Force. The combined total of all Force ( v) stats across a player’s strike team at the start of the Unless the effect says otherwise, measure the Range ( g) of Place effects from the object that is being Placed. Kalani, Super Tactical Droid comes in at 5PC with 0 force points, 10 stamina, and 2 durability. 5PC is another one of those awkward point values where it will be hard to move this unit around in squad building. 2 Durability seems to be the standard for all Secondaries and Supporting units so far but 10 Stamina puts him above the curve.activation, the affected Unit may use one of its Active ( j) abilities without paying its Force ( v) cost. Remember that Units may only use each of their Active When applied to physical items, shatterpoints worked much in the same manner. An individual would view an item through the Force, noting where it came together and also noting weak points in its composition. By allowing the Force to surge through them into the weak point, individuals could effectively "shatter" the object, causing it to break into multiple fragments. Because the Force granted supernatural ability to those who were adept in its use, materials thought to be near-indestructible were easily destroyed. Such was the case with Jedi Knight Jaina Solo, who effortlessly shattered a disc of pure Mandalorian iron while practicing the technique under her uncle, Luke Skywalker. [2] History [ ] This is a squad building system that is both streamlined and full of depth: All the squad boxes you can buy for the game (see the last section of this article) contain full squads of Primary/Secondary/Supporting Units that match a theme in the narrative of their era, and if you want to play a squad that feels like something from the films or tv shows, that’s definitely the way to go. However, if you’re more interested in making the most of the game’s rules when playing competitively, you can absolutely collect all the teams and figure out what the optimal squad for your playstyle is by mixing and matching units from different sets for the best chance of winning. Tactic abilities are Innate abilities that always happen at the start of the Unit’s activation, and which also affect other units. For example, Captain Rex has an ability that lets another Galactic Republic character move when he activates. If you’re a skirmish gamer who also really loves the hobby side of things with assembling and painting your miniatures, even better: Shatterpoint has relatively large miniatures and only around 3-5 miniatures in most squads for the game, so there’s room and time for you to put lots of energy into painting the best looking miniatures you can! There have been multiple Star Wars tabletop games over the years (for which you can see our coverage of by following the links), including card games, dice games, board games, and wargames. Fantasy Flight Games brought the world X-Wing, the incredible starship miniatures battle game, along with Star Wars Armada, which took the scale up to whole fleet battles, then Star Wars Legion, a squad combat game, and now Atomic Mass Games, who have taken the miniatures arm of Fantasy Flight Games on, have released Star Wars Shatterpoint, with a scale to match their Marvel tabletop wargame, Mavel Crisis Protocol. A video trailer, embedded above, shows off some very close-up shots of the new sculpts. Characters include Ahsoka Tano, Bo-Katan Kryze, and Lord Maul (with his fancy metal legs). A news briefing said that players will be able to “mix and match their favorite characters to form custom squads they want to play.”

Many other teams and terrain expansions are being released as well (which you can see in the “upcoming releases” section below), but what’s mentioned above will give you the full experience at a very reasonable price, and buying all the dice, scenery and measuring tools separately is pretty pricey.

The following products are available for Star Wars Shatterpoint, divided into the sub-headings below:always have a Force( v) cost. Each player may only use one Reactive ( i) ability in response to a single triggering event. If you’re a fan of the Star Wars universe in general, that’s already a good enough reason to get involved with Star Wars: Shatterpoint. The game is all about bringing epic lightsaber duels and tense bounty hunter shootouts to life on the tabletop with beatifully sculpted, paintable miniatures that really capture the flavour of the Star Wars universe. a Unit is the group assigned to a specific set of rules cards, such as those of Ventress pictured below – be it a Primary, Secondary or Support unit. Characteristics such as Stamina and Durability are a collective statistic for the entire unit, even if it consists of more than one fighter. This means that if a Supporting unit of 2 Clone Troopers has a Stamina of 9, that unit can take 9 damage before being wounded – not 9 for each Trooper in the unit. Any Action performed by a unit must be performed by all models in that unit, so if you make an Advance action with a Clone Trooper Support unit with 2 models, they must both Advance, even if they’re far apart.
