SMS Power!

Sega released its next console, the 16-bit Mega Drive, in Japan on October 29, 1988. [62] The final licensed release for the Master System in Japan was Bomber Raid in 1989. [20] In the same year, Sega was preparing to release the new Mega Drive, rebranded Genesis, in North America. Displeased with Tonka's handling of the Master System, Sega reacquired the marketing and distribution rights to the Master System for the United States. In 1990, Sega released the remodeled Master System II, designed as a lower-cost version without the Sega Card slot. [20] [33] Sega promoted the new model, but it sold poorly. [20] By early 1992, Master System production had ceased in North America, having sold between 1.5million and 2million units, [12] [63] behind both Nintendo and Atari, which controlled 80 percent and 12 percent of the market respectively. [64] The last licensed Master System release in North America was Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). [20] [65] If you love the SMS, buy the original and get the cable linked above. If you only plan on playing a few SMS games or have limited space, just get a Genesis and one of db Electronics’ Power Base Converters. It’ll give you almost the same experience (SMS on Genesis isn’t emulation), the SMS controllers work in the Genesis and even the 3D glasses work fine.

Works great however weird video glitches can occur at certain points in certain games. E.g. some levels in Alex Kidd MW, The Ninja and Sonic. I've googled around and it seems to be a common issue but not one that's talked about much. Perhaps people don't notice it or dismiss it as it only occurs in certain sections of certain games. There's a post about it on these forums somewhere, will need to dig it up... a b "Master System completa 20 anos de vida no Brasil". Universo Online (in Portuguese). Grupo Folha. September 4, 2009. [20] The Mark III was a redesigned version of the SG-1000. [24] It was engineered by the same team, [25] including Hideki Sato and Masami Ishikawa, who had worked on the II and later led development of the Sega Genesis. [26] According to Sato, the console was designed because of the limitations of the TMS9918 graphics chip in the SG-1000 and II, which did not have the power for the kinds of games Sega wanted to make. The Mark III's chip was designed in-house, based around the unit in Sega's System 2 arcade system board. [23]

The SMS didn’t “lay the ground-work” for the Game Gear, since they are effectively the same machine (but the latter supports a palette of 4096 colours, has stereo sound, a smaller in-built screen, etc). But they have the same CPU, VDP (for the most part), RAM, sound system, etc.
