About this deal

Have to confess I started this book and I wasn’t paying close enough attention and I got really confused and then I got really frustrated...... SO I decided to start the book over and I’m so glad I did that... because once I figured out that this was a book I truly needed to focus on I started to really Become completely engrossed in the story.... However, there are some minor plots which felt unresolved. For instance, why did Ryan resent Len so much? We don’t get much details on their past relationship. Moreover, l wished I liked Kate as the story continued, but she was weak and selfish. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the characters of this story. I can’t really say that I warmed much to the lead character of Kate. There was something about her that set off little alarm bells for me. Kate also seems quite gullible. I mean we have a woman in witness protection, so it’s obvious that she has upset some nasty people, although we don’t find out exactly what she did at first. Kate and her son did a flit, moved somewhere else and then created a new life for them. She tries to keep herself to herself but then all of a sudden, an old acquaintance turns up purely by ‘accident’ and ‘unintentionally’ or at least that is what he says. She seems to swallow everything that he tells her. I would say that in her situation, I would be highly suspicious of him and his motives. It soon emerges that all is not as it seemed at first. Is Kate telling the truth about what happened? Are Kate and her son in danger? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.

The characters were perfectly written, each one believable and provoked the right emotions for this type of book.Wowza!! Guys, this is a September Book of the Month Club selection! And it's so good. An old fashioned great mystery. I love it! The first 2/3 of this book were well-written - the same events told from Karly and Lauren’s opposing viewpoints and all leading to a final confrontation. Then the last part comes along and it’s so confusing and boring that you just don’t care and you’re basically angry that the first 2/3 were written so well to end in this nonsense. Another instance of an author either losing control of the story or trying so hard to be edgy that it was just bad. From this moment, it is clear that Kate’s life is going to take a turn for the worse. Ryan is instantly unlikable; he is slimy, manipulative and viscous. It was obvious how this character fit into Kate’s past, even down to his secret phone-calls to Daz. In this manner, I wish the writer had created more suspense by adding ambiguity to Ryan or even Daz’s character. It was pretty clear, pretty soon, what Ryan’s intentions were and, to be honest, I just wanted the narrative to reach that stage sooner rather than later. The first half of the book rotates chapters. One is Liza .... the things she is going through. The next chapter would be the story she is writing about 'Beth'. It's like trying to read two books at the same time. The first half is a little slow ... no mystery, no suspense. But then it changes..... Cate Holahan did a great job writing this one - two great stories combined into one! A fantastic read that was suspenseful and full of twists. Looking forward to reading more of her books very soon. Recommended!

As Beth has grown up in this village, she knows the victim, as well as most other residents, quite well. Talking to her family, friends, neighbors, Harper and Miller learn nothing about any kind of a motive. Any suspect was immediately looked at, but all their alibis seem to be aboveboard. The beginning felt very juicy- and I like how the author tied together the beginning and the end. It really kept me going through the book, as I wanted to know what would lead up to that quote. Something bad was coming our way. I could feel it. But then, when you courted evil, you shouldn’t be surprised when the devil showed up at your front door.

It's difficult to find an original storyline in thrillers these days, and this one is definitely unique. Beth, a new mother, suspects her husband is cheating on her while she’s home caring for their newborn. Angry and betrayed, she aims to catch him in the act and make him pay for shattering the illusion of their perfect life. But before she realises what she’s doing, she’s tossing the body of her husband’s mistress into the East River. He has enough information over Kate to ruin her new life, and he is about to blow her whole world apart!

Lots of strong characters which I loved and I love how the author painted such a great picture of the characters in your mind, I could imagine exactly what they looked like. Damn, what a story! I loved it. This book follows an author named Liza, who is losing her audience as a mystery writer. Her last book didn't do so well and she's feeling a lot of pressure to write the next great thriller. On top of that, she's struggling with trying to get pregnant and not being able to. This is a story within-a-story and we get to see the new book she's writing in alternating chapters. Her story follows a new Mother named Beth who finds out her husband Jake is cheating on her. The lines between fiction and reality begin to blur and the chapters from her book start to blend into her reality. Eventually, Liza struggles to figure out what is real and what is fiction, and the reader is left wondering as well. She added: “The whole thing just doesn’t feel real. I’m not sure it has hit me that I am doing this and I have achieved it, but maybe I am too reserved and feel let’s not celebrate this too soon. I was completely drawn into this fantastic tale of two women. You will indeed find yourself questioning what part is real and what part is fiction! Oh so deviously twisty! Hilary, our main character, is beyond a realistic portrayal of paranoid for something like what she's hiding. I suspected instantly what the secret was, just based on her initial memories of high school and pranks. She was part of a mean girl clique and pranked the wrong person who then committed suicide. YAWN

Beth is the protagonist in Liza's novel, and it is in this book within a book that the lines of reality and fiction start getting fuzzy when Liza's life starts to unravel, and the story of Beth and Liza begin to have more and more in common. I’m afraid I can’t tell. If you want to know, you’ll just have to read this crazy novel to find out. This book is so entertaining and well written. Because the characters are so well described and detailed you get drawn in. The action and suspense is plentiful and I couldn’t put the book down, devouring it in a couple of days. But when a shady character from Kate’s past turns up and starts to systematically and violently rip everything apart, she is forced to make a choice. Readers looking for a suspense story that's just plain fun to read - a thriller that’s fast-paced, just a touch dramatic, and layered with a “book within a book” mystery - will love Cate Holahan’s LIES SHE TOLD. Readers looking for a dark or violent psychological thriller are better off looking elsewhere (try Karin Slaughter's THE GOOD DAUGHTER); Holahan’s forthcoming thriller isn’t intended to be this kind of read. LIES SHE TOLD is pure entertainment: twisty plotting, unreliable characters, and a deep-dive into the life of a thriller writer make for an addictive, binge-worthy psychological thriller.
