About this deal

Comfort is adequate, but not as good as a lamp that weighs half as much simply due to the tightness required in the band to keep this heavy light secured to your forehead. The headlamp's updated optical efficiency provides brighter light and better battery life which can be tracked with a 6-setting, 3-LED battery meter. However, I'm really looking forward to taking advantage of the waterproof feature for kayaking and paddle boarding this summer. Even on summer days at easily accessible crags, I always have a headtorch stuffed in my climbing bag in case of an ‘epic’, and the compact, lightweight nature of the SPOT 400-R makes it perfect for exactly that.

We don't feel this offers a breakthrough in usability, and it wasn't a feature we missed when we switched to other headlamps. Regarding the Black Diamond’s lumen rating 400lm is meant to be the equivalent of 400 candles in brightness. The one thing that I wish Black Diamond would do with their headlamps would be to provide a helmet mount that could be used to attach the headlamp to a helmet without the use of the headband, similar to the adhesive mounts that Petzl makes for some of its headlamps (e.

When I'm not using it for backpacking I just use it to read a book in my bed at night which the two led's turned down are perfect for. The one-button design is easy to use and switching between modes only takes a push or hold of the button.Like any good headlamp, the Storm has multiple settings (six, in fact), and three lenses: one for distance mode, another for proximity mode, and one that you can toggle between red, green, and blue—versus the standard headlamp bright white—to preserve your night vision. With improved optics over prior versions, the Storm is now a light that our testers feel has great all-around performance, and should no longer be thought of as merely a wet-weather person's headlamp like we pidgeon-holed older versions. Registration only takes effect after receipt of my confirmation; it is possible to unsubscribe at any time. Given the crux of replacing batteries (or charging four if you opt to), I wouldn’t recommend this headlamp for long night sessions on a rope, when prolonged bright light is necessary. In fact, using the headlamp extensively in Death Valley for a week of mine exploration and camping, I noticed no discernibly reduction in light output.

I was skeptical of Black Diamond’s claims that this torch’s battery could hold up for 4 hours at maximum output with a 1 hour reserve for low intensity activities, but observing the battery meter after a good couple of hours of scrambling and rigging abseils in the dark, I’d say this is actually pretty accurate. Its contoured mount and tapered, soft-touch elastic headband give it a comfy fit, which mostly makes up for the weight (unless you're running, when a second over-head strap might have added more stability). Living in the Lake District means my gear often has to deal with inclement weather when I’m out and about, and the SPOT 400-R was subject to some typical Cumbrian conditions on more than one occasion. The headlamp has Black Diamonds Brightness Memory feature, which allows you to turn the light on and off at a chosen brightness without reverting back to the default, full power setting.International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions. The lightweight nature of the SPOT 400-R meant that it was barely noticeable, and its smooth angling hinge (as opposed to the staggered, clunky angling of other models) is another small but much appreciated detail. Appearances are deceptive though, and I’d say whilst by no means the hardiest model I’ve ever used, the SPOT 400-R isn’t as fragile as it seems. For Scottish winter mountaineering it'd more than do in main torch mode (though I'd prefer the Storm as my primary light), but it's also nice and compact if you're carrying it as your backup.

On the upside, Black Diamond's new headlamps use recycled elastic in the headbands, while the packaging is now plastic-free (something that's great to see).I have had this lamp for about three months and I still just need to hit random buttons multiple times or for varying durations until, by luck, it does what I want it to. It’s also waterproof and dustproof IPX67 which in this case also means you can dunk it in water for an hour and a half, which is a pretty long time. The Storm 400 is a burly fully waterproof and dustproof headlamp build for any adventure or weather you can throw at it. The unit is almost like your own personal floodlight and for better or worse I’ve had complaints from people I’m blinding them with it!
