Entertainment Weekly. 12 July 2013 . Retrieved 15 October 2020. Win and Nell both applaud for Marlene after her promotion, while simultaneously revealing their envy. Win assures Marlene that they are happy she was promoted over Howard, but Nell then tells Marlene that she doesn’t like coming in second. Marlene bluntly responds, “Who does?” The exchange shows the mixture of admiration, envy, competition and support that characterizes the relationship amongst the women at the office. The conversations between Win, Nell, and Marlene mirror the surreal dinner party in Act 1 - the women all bond over their struggles against patriarchy. Although they do get jealous of individuals at times, they can recognize the grander societal importance of Marlene, a woman, being chosen for a promotion over Howard, a man. Vivid, insightful and extremely powerful, I have thought about this book every day since reading it. A must-read for everyone.’ Marie Claire

There are considerable trigger warnings for this book including severe violence, guns, weapons, prison, drugs, rapes, sexual assault, statutory rape and police misconduct but it is a searing, eye opening, hard hitting and vividly insightful story that I simply couldn’t put down. Her bravery in getting out of drug dealing, rebuilding her life and in telling her story needs to be applauded. Joyce is Marlene’s sister and Angie’s adoptive mother. Whereas Marlene is ambitious, self-serving, and cosmopolitan, Joyce is humble, giving, and rooted firmly in her small, working-class hometown. Joyce is not by any means… Myth busting and destroying the stereotypes of who and what a drug dealer looks like and where they come from. You don't sign up for a gang, they are your friends. years and up should be offered this book to read as it can show how easily they can be pulled into this world by a few kind words and treats. Top Girl is a non-fiction, candid account of Danielle Marin, a grammar school girl turned county lines drug dealer. Danielle gives a powerful, raw, no holds barred account of life as a gang member and drug dealer. It isn’t a glamorous story, in fact it’s an ugly one, but it’s also an important one, as it shows how bad choices, mixing with the wrong crowd can lead someone down a dark and dangerous path where violence is the everyday norm. The trues life story of Danielle Marin, a school kid in London who at the age of 12 is groomed and becomes involved in drug dealing and "gangs". Top Girls is a 1982 play by Caryl Churchill. It centres on Marlene, a career-driven woman who is heavily invested in women's success in business. The play examines the roles available to women in old society, and what it means or takes for a woman to succeed. It also dwells heavily on the cost of ambition and the influence of Thatcherite politics on feminism. Wow! I couldn’t put this book down, I loved it. I would recommend children and young adults read this book as they will learn about how easy you can find yourself in some hard and upsetting situations. I loved the character Danielle, she was strong and she owned what she went through.. she didn’t see herself as the victim. Danielle is the narrator of this book. This book is an inspiration. You can turn your life around. It’s not too late! Betrayed by the police, she finds protection under the wing of organised criminals and falls in love with the local ‘top boy’. However, her allegiances bring terror to her doorstep when gun-toting rivals target her flat – and the authorities answer by taking away her child. I thought God would speak to me directly. But of course he knew I was a woman." - Joan, Act 1, p. 14
