About this deal

Even when I’m not moving, when I lie in bed staring at the notches in the wooden beam dividing the ceiling, it groans and whispers as it stretches its worn joints. However, the FMC's back-and-forth between the two guys was tiresome, but I could ignore it because the plot kept me invested. If she joins them, they promise to teach her the skills she needs to hunt vampires and avenge her mother. However, to become immortal like them, she has to prove herself in a competition against other apprentices. Ava and her brother have been shuffled from foster home to foster home after her mum was killed by a vampire when they were young.

Cruel Illusions by Margie Fuston | Hachette UK

Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. It's a roller coaster ride into a dark sinister world where you constantly question what is real magic and what is just an illusion. Foster money stops at 18, Deb is willingly spending her own money (as a single mother) to help Ava feel comfortable and the response is that she won’t even thank Deb because that would give too much power to her.Speaking in terms of romance, there is a love triangle but it was not heavy or cringe for me, indeed I must say that the romance was very successful but in this book it has very little space so do not expect an entirely romance book. The magicians may not be the bloodsuckers she's hunting, but Ava is convinced something supernatural is at play, so she sneaks backstage and catches them in acts they can't explain. Based on the author's note, it seemed Stephanie Garber was an inspiration for Margie Fuston and it works so well for this story. I wish the book really chose what it wanted to be a lot sooner as it felt like the author was trying to achieve too many things in just one book that the plot was quite off pace hence it taking 50% to get worth reading!

Sometimes I get the urge to push it straight through my skin, like it would just go—no trick, just real magic. Some people speculate that he was on the verge of being one of the greats when he disappeared from center stage and became known for doing small pop-up shows with a mysterious woman—my mom. Ava complains about heating him up leftover spaghetti for dinner, how the hell did she think she’d be able adopt him and meet that kids needs when heating up dinner for thirty seconds in the microwave was too much effort?

The competition is dangerous, grim, and a little macabre, yet I dare you to tear your eyes away for even a second. Big thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this one early, will definitely be thinking about this one for a while!
