About this deal

Tolkien believed that the roots of myth and the roots of language are one and indivisible, and he demonstrated this belief by creating an entirely new language (Elvish) with its own grammar, its own beautiful script and its own mythology. This new edition includes all 50 of Alan Lee's beautiful watercolour paintings that have been newly scanned by the artist himself, together with his stunning frontispiece painting that appears in full, for the very first time, as a three-page foldout sheet. The unjacketed book features illustrated boards and includes a silk ribbon marker, and is housed in a special transparent slipcase; together with Alan's beautiful paintings, this new presentation of this landmark work provides the reader with the ultimate edition with which to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its first publication.

I agree that they might have been better in a thicker glossy paper, but they are perfectly acceptable to me. Looking back on it after growing more familiar with the series, it's a little barebones in terms of characterisation and has been written with a lot of restraint. The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition. The second and third books have a much better pace and it's clear this is where the story truly took off.Lee's classic illustrations were first published in Harper Collins' 'New' [single-volume] edition of 1991. I'm assuming everyone by now has a pretty good idea of what the book is about, so this review focuses on the look and feel of this edition.

The book isn't too heavy and the pages open up flat, which makes it perfect for this who enjoy reading for long periods of time. They're fantastic to look at but if I'm honest, I feel like they're the one part of the collection that feels cheap. Read it and be transported away from this wretched world to the world of Middle-Earth which will take your breath away. Readers will be able to follow the complete story of the Hobbits and their part in the quest for the Ring – beginning with Bilbo’s fateful visit from Gandalf and culminating in the dramatic climax between Frodo and Gollum atop Mount Doom – while also enjoying over seventy full-page colour paintings and numerous illustrations which accompany this epic tale. Tolkien had seen her sketches and was so impressed that his executors gave special permission for Fraser to interpret them for these Folio editions. The original ‘fantasy’ series, and still the greatest, The Lord of the Rings has sold over 100 million copies, been translated into more than 40 languages, and has been voted the best book of the 20th century. Produced in 1991 to promote the reissue of Tolkien under Harper Collins during the 'Tolkien Centenary' in 1992. Books have been my sanctuary, my escape, my salvation, and a dozen other life-changing and life-defining things since I was a teen.
