About this deal

Her lawyer, Otto Peltier, is in over his head, so when he can’t cut a deal for his client, he implores Eddie’s team to take over. His partner Kate believes that Carrie is another of her husband’s Victims, and that she is innocent- and she wants the case! Finally the author is (as Lee Child says) very strong on dialogue – in particular I think he is very strong on the unspoken words and implications behind the words spoken, particularly when neither of the two parties is being straight with the other: we see this for example in: Aaron and Hanna’s sexually charged but also duplicitous conversations; the on-the-record/off-the-record conversations between Aaron and the CIA station chief; and in some emotionally charged conversations at a German-émigré heavy reception that Aaron attends. If you are interested in reading about Nazi doctors, I highly recommend Doctors from Hell: The Horrific Account of Nazi Experiments on Humans. It is not very long, has pictures, and is written by a journalist, so it is not a very tedious nonfiction read.

This appears to be my first introduction to Lisa Lutz (although her book The Passenger sounds very familiar and it came out long before I was reviewing books, so it's entirely possible that I read it and just don't remember. 🤷‍♀️), but I must say, I was impressed! This is one of those books where I kept changing my mind on "whodunnit" and every single character's extent of involvement - my favorite kind of read!

Additionally, the narrative was such a twisted web. My word! Every single person was keeping secrets on some level. I remember stumbling upon the Eddie Flynn series and bingeing the first few novels. Since then, I have tried to keep my eyes open for new submissions by Steve Cavanagh, all of which open my eyes to new angles of American criminal defence. Cavanagh knows his stuff and keeps the reader completely engaged as they progress through the story, making this the perfect piece for any who have a penchant for legal thrillers. For the remaining survivors of the Holocaust the term “statute of limitations” is meaningless, they still want justice. No one knows how many of Hitler’s murderers remain alive or where they might be, but for the few their culpability in the Nazi death machine should merit capture, trial, and punishment no matter their age or medical condition. As in the recent novel ONCE WE WERE BROTHERS by Ronald H. Batson, the obsession on the part of a few to bring these criminals to justice dominates the story line as does Joseph Kanon’s latest novel, THE ACCOMPLICE. Kanon, a prolific novelist whose books include THE GOOD GERMAN, LOS ALAMOS, ALIBI, and his most recent novel LEAVING BERLIN has once again written a thriller based on what appears to be actual events exhibiting a superb command of history and the characters that have driven it. The Accomplice was an entertaining novel that kept me guessing until the end. Up to the last part, it was a four for me but the ending let me down. After all the build-up, it was missing the "awe" conclusion it needed. Eddie has been hired for the case after the original lawyer, Otto Peltier, finds himself over his head in such a serious case. Eddie’s only rule when deciding whether to take cases is that he must be convinced the defendant is innocent. But when the rest of the country is baying for his client’s blood, convinced she is as guilty as her husband, it’s clear that this is going to be an emotional case.

Lisa Lutz has, not for the first time, written an absolutely incredible story. There is a whodunnit vibe spread throughout the whole book, which very much kept me guessing for the entirety of my time reading.A complimentary copy was provided by Ballantine Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Other characters that Kanon effectively develops include Fritz Gruber, who was Max’s partner in hunting Nazis. Goldfarb, a sewing machine factory owner in Buenos Aires who assisted Aaron and the Mossad. Dr. Markus Bildner, a Nazi who had been in charge of Schramms sterilization experiments under Mengele and assisted Schramm in his desire to leave Argentina. Jamie Campbell a CIA operative in Buenos Aires assists Aaron at first in his quest for justice. But once higherups in Washington have other ideas for Schramm it becomes a battle to keep the Nazi doctor away from the CIA as well as the Israelis who want to kill him. Aaron goal is to send him to Germany for trial which becomes very difficult once governments become involved. The most important character is Hannah Crane who turns out to be Schramm’s daughter. The give and take between her and Aaron is fascinating as they do the love dance, or perhaps she is just a means to getting her father. Their relationship has a touch of realism as Aaron begins to fall for her, but the memory of his promise to Max clouds his judgement.

Eddie Flynn won't take a case unless his client is innocent. Now, he has to prove to a jury, and the entire world, that Carrie Miller didn't know her husband's dark side. But so far, Eddie and his team are the only ones who believe that she had no part in the murders. Otto Schramm is a fictional character, but many of the facts mentioned by the characters about Nazis in exile are true: the "ratlines" that Argentine leader Juan Peron used to help the Nazis escape Germany, the assassination of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann.......How much of a responsibility do you think writers of historical fiction have to make sure the underlying facts of their books are accurate?" One morning, Luna heads out to meet Irene for a run at their regular spot, she gets there only to find Irene dead. She's been murdered! He has created an amazing character, Eddie Flynn, and his books are each one better than the other! Lisa Lutz just gets better and better, and . . . The Accomplice may just be her best so far.” — CrimeReadsUpdate 1/25/22: Reposting my review to celebrate that today is publication day! That was the day it all began. Luna and Owen. Owen and Luna. Their names would be inextricably linked for years to come. The one steady thing in their unsteady lives. Before long, neither would be able to imagine a life without the other. It would be hard not to admire the strength of their bond. However, if you were in their orbit, you might come to realize that it was a dangerous place to be. Not everyone there made it out alive. Thanks to Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley for sending me an ARC of The Accomplice in exchange for an honest review. I am a huge fan of Ms. Lutz’s last novel, the criminally underrated The Swallows, so I could not wait to dig into her newest book.

When he meets Carrie, he sees a woman heavily weighed down by a sense of grief and guilt, her suffering persuades him that she is innocent, although he can feel Carrie has not told him everything as he sets out to defend her. He and his hardworking and talented team, consisting of ex-judge, mentor and now consultant Harry Ford, partner Kate Brooks, investigator Bloch and his over-qualified office manager, Denise, are the only ones who believe Carrie is innocent, and simply another victim of the Sandman. They are joined by Gabriel Lake, once a former FBI agent before someone tried to kill him, he believes everything the FBI knows about serial killers is false, and he is a man who wants revenge. Interspersed throughout the narrative is the perspective of the Sandman, intent on saving and freeing his much loved wife, he is once again killing to protect Carrie, and everyone, including Eddie and his team are a target.
