Oct 20 Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida on the Game's Anime Influences and Design Philosophy We follow an unnamed girl - the last human alive - and her talking dog - Haru - as they wander aimlessly about in the apocalypse. The dynamic between Haru and the girl resembles the classic Japanese comedy roles of boke and The series will premiere on YouTube this summer. Maaya Uchida will play the master and world's sole survivor, and Mutsumi Tamura will play Haru the dog. You'd think a story about the apocalypse would be sad, but it's not. It's not even necessarily bittersweet. While I wouldn't use terms like "heartwarming" or "charming," I will most definitely say that this is a very chill book, cute, and a lot of fun to read. As I mentioned before, this book is full-color, and its format is four-panel strips. There's not a huge amount of continuity, and although there are recurring characters (the aliens, Snow White the Shiba Inu who has a crush on Haru), there's no real sense of when things happen in proximity to one another. Storylines rarely take up more than three consecutive strips, and there's a sense that this is more interested in snapshots of life rather than telling a narrative. It's perhaps more comparable to newspaper comic strips than manga in terms of style. The art is pleasant to look at and the homages to 1950s science fiction tropes are a major highlight, while the variety of beings the characters encounter on their journey stands in nice contradiction to the majority of “teen girls after the world ends road trip” manga. In a notable difference from most publishers' approach to cultural notes, this volume puts them after each chapter, which I feel works better than throwing them all at the end.

The 2004 version of Appleseed follows Deunan, an ex-soldier and one of the few people left after the Global War, and the man she once loved, Briareos, who's now a cyborg. The rest who survived the war are half-clones who can't reproduce as humans would, and their world is overseen by an AI. A lot of the jokes are aimed at a Japanese audience and as such there are references to Japanese folk tales and traditional beliefs that a an unfamiliar viewer might struggle to understand, but the show uses its visuals and the pair's commentary to provide enough context for it to make sense. Each episode is extremely short and consists of multiple skits, so a joke never overstays its welcome, though because of this, it's sometimes too fast for a skit to be fully developed. A young teenage girl wanders through a decrepit wasteland, void of civilization. She is alone, save for her faithful companion—Haru, a loyal Shiba Inu. Doomsday With My Dog GN 1 - Review - Anime News Network

EditSynopsis An apocalyptic event has transformed Earth into a desolate wasteland, leaving a young girl as the sole human survivor. On her journey across this dystopian environment, she is followed by a quirky companion: a talking pet Shiba Inu! Not a continuous storyline, more a collection of 4-panel strips following the sole human survivor of an unspecified apocalypse, a teen/twentysomething girl wandering Japan with her faithful Shiba Inu dog without any real purpose, having conversations with her talking dog and encountering various fictional beings along the way (homesteading aliens who look exactly like the one in the movie 'Paul', kappas, tanuki, kitsune, etc). There's no plot here, it's just semi-philosophical/psychological conversations interspersed with silly doings. Inugamihime ni Kuchizuke - MangaDex

Planet of the Something or Other / Unchanging Relationship / A Dog Who Won`t Understand, a Girl Who Can`t Read a MapI was expecting just a cute book full of adventures between a girl and her dog, but it became more than that. It showed a world where there was no need for any more humans, because it was simply just a girl hanging out with her dog. Doomsday With My Dog's first volume is, by and large, fun. That bonus chapter is a blow (although very well done), but generally its breezy approach to post-apocalyptic adventure fiction sets it apart in a positive way. After all, who better to travel with than your fuzzy best friend?
