Though the brand’s first whiskey was supposed to be released in October of 2010, master distiller Lincoln delayed the launch six months until he deemed the liquid perfect. However, the bottles were already stamped with the formerly planned launch date: 10/10. Angel’s Envy has purposely refrained from updating its corks, keeping the 10/10 as a reminder that, when it comes to whiskey, perfection is worth waiting for. Though Angel’s Envy launched in 2011, it didn’t have its own distillery until 2013. Until July 9, 2013, when the brand broke ground on its distillery in downtown Louisville, Angel’s Envy was using small batches of whiskey sourced from various distilleries. Distilling in this particular building was particularly meaningful to Lincoln, as his own father had worked there years prior. The distillery was completed and opened to the public in 2016, becoming the first full-production whiskey distillery in downtown Louisville.

Flavors can vary widely from barrel to barrel, so Angel’s Envy blends in small batches to ensure that each one meets the same consistent standard of flavor. Built on a tremendous legacy and a pioneering spirit, Angel’s Envy innovated the foundations of bourbon and rye through a unique “secondary finishing” technique. By maturing our whiskey in charred oak barrels, then transferring it to secondary finishing casks, we crafted a distinct blend of refined complexity with an inviting flavor profile. Unlike over whiskies, bourbon must include a mash bill of at least 51 per cent corn (with the remainder made up from rye, wheat or barley) before spending two years or more maturing in new, charred oak barrels. It’s these specifications that give bourbon its unique, sweet, oak-forward flavour profile. Angel’s Envy has a team of more than 50 Whiskey Guardians, local spirits experts whose job it is to educate their communities about bourbon — specifically Angel’s Envy. With members based everywhere from Singapore, to Melbourne, to Louisville, the program was created based on the belief that the best way to reach a new community is through the people who already live and work there. Whiskey Guardians are lovers of the spirit who are highly active in their local hospitality communities. They host Angel’s Envy events for their local communities, spreading the word about the brand. Please enjoy our Angel’s Envy Bourbon Finished in Port Wine Barrels review! Angel’s Envy Was A Pioneer If bourbon is an old industry based in tradition, Angel’s Envy is the teenaged rebel. Compared to many of its generations-old predecessors, Angel’s Envy is a young brand that doesn’t always play by the rules. It’s among the first of American whiskey brands to use a double-maturation process that’s commonly used in Scotch production, and its original expression is aged in both new charred American oak and former port casks. Due in part to the complete creative freedom given to Henderson in its creation, Angel’s Envy occupies a unique spot on the American bourbon spectrum. Finished in port casks, the sourced whiskey claims to upset traditional views of what bourbon truly means. Their advertising campaign – seemingly against themselves– proves as much. In this tasting, I set out to discover if Angel’s Envy lives up to the hype. On the very first day the distillery was open, according to a spokesperson, Angel’s Envy production needed to mill malted barley — which is used in the mash — into the cooker. However, instead of the barley going into the tanks, it was blown into the actual mill room, resulting in a foot and a half of malted barley covering the floor. It took six hours, and many employees, to clean the space. All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon... you follow? Simply put, what distinguishes bourbon from other whiskeys is the way it’s produced and matured. To be classified as bourbon, its mash (that is, the mixture of grains to be distilled) must contain at least 51% corn, which gives it its distinctive sweet aroma. Any other grains can be used in the other 49%, and those are usually a combination of wheat, rye, and malted barley.

The brand relies on word-of-mouth marketing.

There’s a bourbon for every occasion and, with so many new ones popping up on the market in the last couple of years, many more great ones than you likely imagine. What is bourbon whiskey? Bourbon must be aged in new charred oak barrels and bottled at no less than 40% ABV. There isn’t a minimum ageing requirement, however bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years to be labelled as “straight bourbon” and a minimum of three to be recognised as whiskey in the EU. What does bourbon taste like? Let us not forget that bourbon is an incredible ingredient in its own right, too; there’s no barbecue wing, brisket or brownie (yes, brownie) that hasn’t been bettered with a splash of bourbon, in my personal experience. What you taste is all natural and typically characterised by aromas of vanilla, oak, caramel and spice. How to drink bourbonTake your lead from scotch whisky drinking protocols and enjoy bourbon from a Glencairn glass. The curved vessel enhances the aromas and overall imbibing experience. We’re experts in whisky and work closely with distilleries to ensure we’re only offering the very best in our selection. With a variety of whiskies from around the world, you can be confident that we have a bottle that you’ll love. Of course, they all have their place. When temperatures started rising this summer, all I wanted was a swig of small-batch bourbon over an enormous ice cube. When hosting whiskey-loving pals for drinks, I make more Old Fashioneds than a Shoreditch bar on a Saturday night. If you’re drinking your bourbon straight, you may want to add a few drops of water or a large ice cube, but this is largely down to personal preference. Both will slightly alter the taste and temperature of the spirit. Wes and Lincoln decided to explore secondary barrel finishing, such as using port barrels, a technique commonly used in Scotch that was rarely seen in bourbon. While a few other brands offer finished bourbons, usually through extremely limited releases, Angel’s Envy was among the first American brands to commit to the concept and release core bourbons and ryes using finishing barrels. It’s also the most commercially successful brand that uses the technique.
