Finish: Short to medium in length and with a very pleasant gentle progressive fade. A touch of cask spicing and barley malts. The first time I heard the term used in a wine store, the salesman was using it on a customer, I almost busted out laughing right in front of them. The customer must have felt like a jerk, afterall his mere pallet only qualified for the ‘entry level’ wine, he probably walked away thinking that his holiday dinner at home which he was buying the wine for was – well just an entry level dinner too, poor guy. Cragganmore distillery is located in Ballindalloch, Speyside. It sits by the River Spey and it’s also near to the Strathspey railway line, both important factors when the distillery location was decided. The distillery takes its name from the mountain in whose shadow it sits.

In the glass, Cragganmore has the color of white wine with the kind of rich substance that leans out of paleness and into gold. The nose is fragrant with spring meadow scents, heather, hay and wildflowers, mingled with a tinge of smoke, as if a fire were downwind.

Pretend for a minute that you are a producer, you make X number of bottles per year and release them at price Y, all of the bottles easily sell, so what do you do next year ? You increase the price, if indeed all of those bottle sell the next year, you raise the price again, and so on until you find the point of losing demand – and that’s the price of your bottle. The Cragganmore 12 Year Old is the entry level malt of this Speyside distillery and is also the representative of the region in Diageo's Classic Malts of Scotland series. I am trying it from a 200ml bottle that came in a green box with a Talisker and Lagavulin. This would be fantastic at a higher abv, but that can be experienced in the several special editions or independent bottlings available for those willing to do some sleuthing. Altogether it’s a solid bottle to start off a beginner’s journey into single malts.

Definitely grassy, with apple and vanilla the 2 dominant flavors. Again a light whiff of smoke to add balance. Very polite and easy going. 46%abv would really help things here in they way of flavor. The flavors here are quite nice and balanced, they're just weak. Taste: Good translation to the palate bringing across malty nuts and toffee alongside honey and just the slightest hint of barrel char and/or smoke. Relatively ‘chewy’ despite its 40% ABV and with a dash of damp earth and minerality which make for a welcome clean taste.Cragganmore 12 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Whisky Rating and Review | Wine Enthusiast". www.wineenthusiast.com . Retrieved 7 October 2023. PALATE: Honey and fruit sweetness with hints of smoked nuts and malt. The Cragganmore 12 yo has a medium body and a creamy mouthfeel. Adding water softens the sweetness and brings more spices to the front. Suddenly there are notes of spicy oak and dry orange peel with cloves and pepper. Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 Palate: More orchard fruit, some drying spice and a little honey initially, then water reveals a savoury hint of gamey meat is followed by a note of peppery oak and then a sweet layer of vanilla sugar. Nose: the barley-malt shows sweet and tart citrus; there is also just a hint of grape fruitiness, and very light wood influence. There is no significantly noticeable smoke and only the faintest hint of peat. This nose is straightforward, pleasant, inoffensive, but not remarkable
