About this deal

However as you grown to know these 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 throughout the story, it’s heart-wrenchingly easy to see that not all is as it seems to be. The characters are well written and easy to love. I don’t sleep heavily, but I had to re-listen to more than ¼ of the chapters, either because my mind wandered off and I completely stopped actively listening to a chapter, or because I couldn’t tie the new chapter’s subject matter to the one preceding it.

It's tough to rate books that aren't really books. This seems like it could be the beginning of a good serial though. We'll see. I can not wait to see what happens between these new MC's. Unfortunately, I know what eventually happens in this story (remember, this IS a prequel), but that does not take away from what I want to know about these characters that I have come to know and have become invested in.I always enjoy reading Mr. Wheeler’s works, because these are easy reads with good characters, good story-telling and steeped with history. Wheeler’s stories are a great palate cleanser and an excellent light read that always draw me in further and further into the story. I am starting to wonder how I feel about all the Wheeler worlds being connected. He ties in Mirrowen and Kingfountain here again and I *think* we actually meet the lady of the fountain, although briefly. I guess it creates a lot of Easter eggs for those of us who have read *all* the books but multidimensional stuff starts to go over my head sometimes. They could have all just been neighboring countries or different continents too 🤷‍♀️ July 10, 2022: Some subtle nuances, cognitive dissonance, maybe an unreliable narrator, huh, better than I thought. I’m liking this. Eilean is rising. A foundling raised in an abbey, she was entrusted by its imprisoned druid, Mordaunt, with an ancient tome. Its magical words can change the world. Eilean’s first mission: translate it. Her second: rescue a benevolent Aldermaston sentenced to death as a heretic by the high seer. But wielding power, knowledge, and ambition has now made Eilean the hunted. The world-building is excellent and continues to build on the already well documented lore from previous series by Mr. Wheeler. It’s so exciting to see some of these places that I’ve seen previously, but this time, to see how they started. Because he has based his world off of real places, he can really dig into what everything looks like and make it feel legitimately real. The abbeys, the landscape, the people, it all just feels like we are transported in time rather than transported into another world.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own* I also really liked the theme of overcoming your differences to hear what others are saying. Everyone is so blinded by pride and the inability to effectively communicate in this day and age. It's an interesting idea to explore and have different characters reacting based on their prejudices and personalities Jeff’s third series on 47North is called Kingfountain. It is set in a completely new world and follows the young protagonist throughout the three books as he grows up from a boy into a man. The continued popularity of Jeff and his books was proven as he entered the Wall Street Journal book charts and the second book in the series gained his highest reader rating of any books published at that point.Indeed, I’m wondering if Wheeler actually spoke about Eilean in an earlier series (not by name), but I guess I’ll have to wait for “The Betrayed” to find out.
