About this deal

Tamblyn took inspiration from her friend Rose McGowan — who was appalled that every article about her bore the face of her assailant (Harvey Weinstein) — and gave her rapist character no voice or POV, as it would have seemed more “violent” if we were allowed to see this as the rapist’s story. Tamblyn uses this less common story, of men being the victims of assault, to examine how we as a society, through conversations, through the news, through social media, think and talk about sexual assault. Why do we, as a society, blame the victim, use them as the story of the day and then toss them aside when something more horrifying comes alone?

I read and loved Tamblyn's Dark Sparkler a few years ago, and I was excited to see what would happen when she turned her attentions to full-length prose. She attended the Santa Monica Alternative School House, which, in her words, was "very unorthodox, no letter grades". This is the story of five men, all of whom have been the victim of an anonymous serial rapist known as Maude. As the years tick by, we watch them struggle to cope, to heal, to make sense of what they've been through, and come out the other side alive, though not unscathed.maude herself is a mysterious figure, because her individual motivations are less important than the toxic rape culture which plagues survivors. Tamblyn takes the potentially-cringeworthy concept of a female rapist raping men and makes it potent because it doesn't so much focus on the perp as it does the victims. A web designer begins an online flirtation with a mysterious person who later stalks and rapes the designer. On the big screen, Tamblyn starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Ring, 127 Hours, and earned a nomination for Best Supporting Female at the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards for her performance in Stephanie Daley, which she starred in opposite Tilda Swinton. I would be remiss if I didn't make it very clear to other readers that this book, while extremely well done and purposeful, is also very in your face with the many facets of sexual assault.

Her feminist cred earned her the benefit of the doubt; if anyone could do this story justice, I thought (hoped) it might be her.

And while there are echos of this misogynist cutout in the public's reaction to Maude, I think we're meant to see it as ridiculous, even horrifying. I was facing the windows and leaning over some old woman who wasn't making eye contact because you don't do that on NYC public transportation if you can help it.

There’s something about social media that keeps us trapped, and it trains people like myself who are in positions of privilege and power to know that all I have to do is tweet out my thoughts and prayers, and I’ll get this many retweets, and I’ve done my work. We hear ALL the time how a woman shouldn't have worn that short skirt or dressed herself up like that if she didn't want the attention. Amber Tamblyn is an author, actress, and director who has been nominated for Emmy, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit awards for her work in television and film. The School Library Journal 's review states that, " Free Stallion is a compilation of poetry that amounts to a portrait of the artist as a teenager.Told in alternating viewpoints, signature to each voice and experience of the victim, these pages crackle with emotion ranging from horror to breathtaking empathy. As bold as it is timely, Any Man is a tribute to those who have lived through the nightmare of sexual assault and asserts how the power of speaking out can change not only the life of survivors, but so too the world around them.

Any Man - Amber Tamblyn

Best case scenario, I thought it might be a well-meaning - but ultimately doomed - attempt to foster empathy for survivors of rape by switching up the genders: making the perpetrator a woman, and her victims men. Tamblyn co-wrote, directed, and produced the feature film Paint It Black, adapted from Janet Fitch’s cult classic novel of the same name. My own experience became more valid to me because I looked at it happening to people who aren't usually the victims, who to my mind shouldn't be the victims, and felt all the horror and anger and lust for justice. Michael Parker, Maude's trans victim, kills himself - though whether because of the assault, or because he's outed by the national media, is unclear.

Most recently, she starred opposite Diane Lane in FX’s sci-fi drama series Y: The Last Man and will next be seen on the new season of Inside Amy Schumer. We can't let loose our rage on the world and then leave others to pick up the pieces and find the solutions. Sometimes these various pieces of media have a special significance to a specific survivor, providing depth, nuance, and a sense of uniqueness to his voice and perspective. I haven't had the chance to listen to the audiobook version, but I imagine that it is even more moving to hear the narratives come to life, so please pick that one up if you can.
