For starters, the screen sports an underwhelming WXGA (1280×800) resolution, meaning sub-Full HD visuals are the best it can muster. Do not use it for heavy office work or creativity. Use it to fill out forms, process claims, or take photos of injuries to send to the triage unit. The oleophobic coating which covers the 8in display is top notch, too, and any greasy fingerprints that build up can be wiped off with almost magical ease. It’s also highly efficient at resisting water: at a raised angle, liquids run off display with lightning speed and, being IP68 waterproof, you’d be safe using it in a rainstorm. And Samsung has added a couple of extra outdoors-y display features – Glove Touch and Wet Touch mode – which alter the screen’s sensitivity so it can be used more easily in cold or wet conditions. The stylus offers a pleasing level of drag and resistance across the Active 2’s screen, with a hard 0.7mm nib. However, it doesn’t offer a particularly deep drawing experience, with no tilt detection or the option to shade at an extreme angle, as with the Apple Pencil. If you dunk the tablet, you need to remove the case to dry it off, and wait for the "moisture in the USB port" alert to go away. I waited about 40 minutes for it to go away before speeding it up with a few blasts from a commercial hand dryer. A rubber plug attachment would have been nice too.The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 runs on last year’s Android Nougat 7.1.1 operating system with Samsung’s own launcher software overlaid. If you’re already using Android 8 on your smartphone you’ll find that Android 7.1.1 has fewer emoji options – but other than that, I had no issues with the OS or the user interface – it’s just like using a (really) big Samsung phone. Thankfully, as with its smartphones, the company’s Samsung Experience 9.5 overlay sidesteps most of the user-side shortcomings that running an older version of Android would present. Its ruggedised customisations are unquestionably more than cosmetic and the added S Pen functionality make it a great tool for both adventures, creatives and as an educational tool.
