This came to an end in 2023, when Dragon's Egg, Comet and Summer Sky all failed to qualify for Season 6. I won't spoil the story by saying, but this is one of the most thought inspiring sci-fi novels I've read in a long time. I'm reminded of several novels that came out after this one, of course, such as Baxter's Flux, which might be a bit wilder and far-future, but has humans living on a neutron star, too, but I'm also thinking about Children of Time and Crucible of Time from other authors. Then, in a flash of inspiration, one of the greatest mathematical minds ever hatched in the past of future history of the cheela made a great leap of abstract thought.

The cheela culturally evolve from savagery to the discovery of science, and for a brief time, men are their diligent teachers.

Funnily enough, if taken as metaphor, the stuff about the gods wanting to communicate with them aren't that wrong, since at that point the humans are about to initiate first contact. Given that I was rather surprised at the quality of something that rated highest on my recommendations list, I think I'll stick with three to balance that. Consistency in particular seems to be Dragon's Egg's most major virtue and the key to their success over their years of competition. Thus, the humans need to figure things out for themselves, but when they do the files will confirm that they got the right answers and perhaps provide additional details.Compared to those books, Dragon's Egg is like a child's crayon drawing compared to a van Gogh painting. I read this book whilst studying Professor Alex Filippenko's Introduction to Astronomy 96 lecture course during which time he mentioned this book and recommended it to his students. Hence, there were no real surprises along the way and once it got going (contact and beyond) it seemed to me a bit formulaic.
