I ask her if it’s not fraught with a greater degree of peril for women than it is for men. Are they taking a bigger risk? Made up of small but muscular and aggressive factory and shipyard workers from in and around Glasgow, they were a 'bantam' battalion in that they consisted of men 5ft 3in who were originally told they were too small to fight in World War I, only to be called into service. The novel takes place in Scotland and Gray frequently has characters speaking local dialect. I found that to be somewhat distracting. That was a minor issue in an otherwise good novel. A Glasgow Kiss, which follows the life of singleton, Zara, and her journey into the weird and wonderful world of online dating, was published on December 14. Sophie said: “This is something completely new and I’m super excited to be welcoming a wide range of guests to talk about sex, dating and life in Glasgow!” So much so that Sidney Allinson, in his 1981 book The Bantams, said that their "quarrelsome reputation was legendary" and that they were "zestfully as ready to a punch-up with a pubful of English soldiers as to storm a German trench." This being The Herald, I’ve chosen the comparatively subdued aftermath of one of Zara’s bedtime rendezvous which she discusses with her friend, Ashley.

I created a spider diagram of all the ridiculous things that had happened throughout the years. Now, a couple of hours a night I write. Most books about Glasgow tend to be quite dour, based around poverty. I wanted to bring fun to Glasgow with my book. In the process of looking for her there is another body discovered near the spot where Julie is found. Then a third body suggests that there may be a serial killer out there. Solly Brightman begins to look at a profile, and he doesn't believe that Chalmers is the one they are after. Certainly Kyle is not considered for all three killings.

It became the literary hit of the year and marked the arrival of a bright new talent in comedy fiction. Sophie Gravia, mum, nurse and best-selling author of ‘ A Glasgow Kiss’ will be talking about her book at the year's first Bookface Brunch and book swap.I guess, in the end she makes the right choice, but this took her 99% of the book to figure out. And she didn't even know that she had to figure this out until literally the last second. Sophie explains this is a safety mechanism where her friends can electronically embed her location on their smartphones in case anything untoward unfolds. I really wanted this book to be an improvement on A Glasgow Kiss but really it wasn’t. Following the author on social media and seeing the success she has had I did think this book had potential to be more “polished”. I am not the biggest reader of romance or erotica, but I find these genres perfect for summer, so I decided to request this book as a fun romantic read. I am familiar with Glasgow, and as it is not usually the city that comes to mind as a setting for a romantic book, I was intrigued with what the author can do with it. What Happens in Dubai is a sequel to Sophie Gravia’s book A Glasgow Kiss. I have not read the first part, but I think the story is simple enough to follow on its own. When Sophie appeared at one last month the response from women and men was overwhelmingly positive. Yes, some of the scenes are outrageously graphic, but they’re leavened with humour and honesty.”

Sophie Gravia's books A Glasgow Kiss and What Happens in Dubai follow trainee nurse Zara, who's nearing 30 and on the look out for a man in her life. Book one follows on her escapades in dating, with no details left out! There are some moments in these books that had me rolling around laughing and equally cringing with second hand embarrassment for poor Zara. The level of detail in definitely not for the fair of heart. She covers everything from Queefs to the walk of shame, the waddle walk to the glories of shaving the delicate parts and of course the ups and downs of modern dating in Glasgow. Let’s start with the FMC Zara, I’m sorry to say everything about her annoyed me. She was so needy for love, she had no respect for herself and as much as I can handle that sometimes she was just missing some feisty spunk. She needed to have more of a voice and actually stand up for her self! With two plots running simultaneously through the book, with a minor third also appearing from time to time, a reader would perhaps get lost. That is not the case with Gray’s management of her plot line. I was at a loss at times to understand the need for the second and especially the third. Yet I wasn’t writing the book and left that to Alex Gray’s discretion. Readers can meet Sophie and ask her anything they want to know about Zara and her antics in an upcoming Q&A, hosted by Coatbridge-raised book club host, Heather Suttie, on Sunday, August 21, from 1pm-4.30pm at The Corinthian in Glasgow. Little did she know that her romantic nightmares would pave the way for her success as a best-selling author.

From witty one-liners to vibrant characters, she’s got it all. And this time, she’s going full throttle with her podcast, featuring bold and brilliant guests whose dating disasters will leave you wanting more. Several of my female friends have relayed tales of meeting blokes who think that the simple act of agreeing to go on a date is a contractual guarantee of sex. A novel based on a young woman's Glasgow's dating disasters has beaten Shades of Grey on the erotic fiction charts. Recently, on the gogglebox, there have been some howlers posing as provocative television drama that are about as edgy as Classic FM.
