The progress in the phases seems much more regimented, so I think we’ll be “stuck” on stage 4 for quite a while…. I know they all develop differently etc etc but just keen to have a broad idea if DD is where she should be for her age. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds 7+ offers 50 books designed for children in KS2 who need more practice to consolidate their phonic knowledge.

Teachers will use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised assessments and matching grids to ensure that children are given a book that is fully decodable in line with their secure phonic knowledge.Children in Reception and Year 1 who are receiving additional phonics Keep-up sessions read their reading practice book to an adult daily. Little Wandle is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme, which provides high quality planning and resources for the teaching staff. They learn how to ‘grow the code,’ learning that there are different ways to represent the different phonemes that they learnt in Reception. Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory.

Pupils read in all subjects in the curriculum and will read different genres to develop their understanding about a topic. Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is validated by DfE (June 2021) and is included on their list of approved SSP programmes. Children who are not yet decoding have daily additional blending practice in small groups, so that they quickly learn to blend and can begin to read books. This could be done by using pictures, missing words in sentences, fill in the missing sounds, make words with the sound using letters displayed.
