A Better Me is a remarkably frank account of Gary's life as he battled with his demons, endured personal tragedy, and staged one of the most thrilling professional comebacks in decades. A few years ago I was taken aback by how much I loved narrating the audiobook of my autobiography, and I wanted to explore how I could use this storytelling on the stage. I've grown up listening to Take That songs, most notably 'Shine' which was featured in an old TV advert for UK supermarket Morrisons.Barlow’s feud with Robbie Williams turns into a running joke but you get the feeling there’s something much feistier and uglier lurking beneath Barlow’s sneaky swipes at the one band member who chose to step away. They married in January 1967, and our Ian came pretty swiftly after, then me, the greedy-for-attention kid. I had absolutely no idea about some of the things that he has had to overcome and I truly see him in a different light after reading this book. We'd start with a gig in a school assembly in Derby or wherever, the girls rushing at us grabbing and screaming, the lads at the back scowling. The reformed group had another series of number one albums and singles, revitalising their career almost ten years after their split.

Gary, again, mentions that it’s all be told before - but a part of me felt like this was a bit of a cop out to tell some really interesting stories about what went in back in the original haydays of the band. In fact, I used the press conference to announce that one of music's legendary star-makers, Clive Davis, was waiting in New York to sign me to his label. Only six people turned up to the 'nationwide audition' for Take That at La Cage nightclub in Manchester. In fact at the begin of the book he explained he was recording the audio book at home, and apologised for any traffic noise in the background.
