Reminding me somewhat of Luke Rhineheart‘s ‘ The Dice Man,’ ‘ Christie Malry’s Own Double Entry’ also deals with a new way of forging your way through life, a new prism through which to see the pointless and random nature of existence. He is a prankster, a hoaxster, a subversive, a revolutionary, an urban guerilla, who despises the pious mouthings and hypocrisy of society and religion.

Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry' is Johnson's most broadly humorous book, though as readers will discover, his humor has a bite. Johnson was painfully aware of the artifice of the novel, fed-up of conventional narrative styles and the failings of the novel as an art form. Under the column headed 'Aggravation' for offences received from society (unpleasantness of Bank Manager; general diminution of life caused by advertising), debit Christie; under 'Recompense' for offences given back to society (general removal of items of stationery; Pork Pie Purveyors Ltd.There are some grand aggravations, but Christie is not without ambition and resorts to some aggro of his own, to balance things out. In Trawl , his third novel, a passenger on a fishing vessel, while bed bound with sickness, becomes lost within the memories of a childhood and youth that mirror Johnson’s own.

For every offence Christy henceforth received at the hands of a society with which he was clearly out of step. The general feeling about Christie is one of sinking’ – Christie dies of pneumonia, death rattling the book to close. Let us, though, for the time being at least, like the good humans we are, focus on that other god: capitalism. Christie's other doings -- his small and large acts of sabotage -- and his final undoing are also very well done. The world heads to environmental and societal crisis and the necessary action is deemed just too expensive. The course of these events is highly redolent of Johnson’s own path between leaving school and going to university as a mature student.
