About this deal

To my knowledge, most of our enterprise storage is probably still done via disk drives (spinning platter drives), commonly referred to as HDDs (hard disk drives). However, solid-state drives (SSDs) have replaced HDDs and are what most people currently use in their personal computers. Previously, SSDs were more expensive. However, lately, those prices have dropped to affordable levels. Ready to shop? Not quite: Increasingly, mainstream drives now cite support for PCI Express 4.0 as opposed to 3.0. We've tested our share of M.2 SSDs that support the upgraded interface, and they are fast indeed. How much you'll be able to tell the difference, though, comes down to what you do with your PC. The picture below (diagram #2) is a very simplified view of the communication between the Host and the NVMe controller. This architecture allows applications to start, execute, and finish multiple I/O requests simultaneously and use the underlying media in the most efficient way to maximize speed and minimize latencies. How Do NVMe Commands Work?

There are various generations of NVM Express nowadays, and the most common ones are PCIE 3.0 and PCIE 4.0. Both generations of NVMe drives offer incredible speed - so duplicating them is a lot easier than common SSDs or hard drives. Therefore, it's recommended that: There also aren’t as many performance mismatches to worry about it. Your PCIE devices are still going to work just fine, but their speeds are going to be limited to the oldest PCIE device that you have in the connection. As long as the PCIE generation is mismatched, you’ll only ever get performance based on whichever the oldest generation is. Architecturally, the logic for NVMe is physically stored within and executed by the NVMe controller chip that is physically co-located with the storage media, usually an SSD. Version changes for NVMe, e.g., 1.3 to 1.4, are incorporated within the storage media, and do not affect PCIe-compatible components such as motherboards and CPUs. [3]

WATCH THAT BOOT. If your desktop is getting a PCI Express/NVMe drive for the first time, verify with the motherboard or PC maker that the drive will be bootable. It's unlikely, but a BIOS upgrade may be required to get you there. (This is an issue with older motherboards, not current ones.)

The XS70 is priced well for a high-performance 2TB SSD, but there's fierce competition from other third-party SSD makers in this price range. The Silicon Power XS70 2TB SSD is a 2280 (80mm length) M.2 PCIe NVMe drive. It combines Micron 176-Layer TLC NAND with a Phison PS5018-E18 controller and 2GB of DDR4 RAM. That combination is common to many of the best SSDs, including the highly regarded Seagate FireCuda 530 and Kingston KC3000. NVMe based M.2 SSDs, however, can go far faster. Different generations of drives, typically twinned with a generation of PCIExpress, have differing speeds, with the latest PCIE 4 drives reaching up to 7,300MBps in sustained read and 5,200MBps in sustained write. PCIe 3.0’s total throughput is 16Gbps while PCIe 4.0 has double the throughput of PCIe 3.0. It offers up to 16 lanes and can transfer data at up to 32,000MB/s while SATA III transfers only up to 600MB/s. David Gwynne (2014-04-16). NVMe SSD cloning software is a type of program that allows you to replicate one device to another or copy data from one hard drive to another. In an NVMe SSD cloning software, you don't exactly need two NVMe drives from the same manufacturer, storage type, or even generation.

All of this leaves the minor matter of how this drive actually performs. When it comes to peak sequential throughput, the Platinum P41 is basically as fast as anything else out there, bar a few rounding errors. OK, the Samsung 990 Pro is a bit faster at 7,462MB/s for reads to the P41's 7,375MB/s. But, honestly, it's inconsequential. The same goes for writes, where almost all the top drives will do just under 6.9GB/s. Supplement to InfiniBandTMArchitecture Specification Volume 1 Release 1.2.1". Infiniband. September 2, 2014 . Communication drivers are used by operating systems to communicate data with storage devices. NVMe drivers are faster than AHCI drivers, which are commonly found in SATA interfaces.
