Amara's relationships are what makes the story and those with Victoria, Felix and Rufus are some of the most heartbreaking scenes i've read. Without spoilers, to know that people can use, betray, handle others in such a way is mind-blowing and so refreshing to read in terms of realism and igniting real emotions. Her complicated relationship with Felix was a highlight especially because I honestly believe that if he had agreed to free her, marry her and allow her to handle his business with reall respect, Amara would have never left him. She says this of course but the reality of that for me, really had me hating her. I enjoy writing anything with dialogue or humour in it, so those aspects of the books always flowed. I also love the process of weaving historical research and primary classical texts into the narrative - so descriptions of Pompeii, oblique allusions to Latin writers, or any scenes involving Pliny were great fun to write. On the other hand, writing about sexual violence is quite tough and I find action sequences more challenging than scenes which are primarily emotional. I was also quite intimidated by writing the section set in Imperial Rome, as this is such a famous world which has been reimagined many times in fiction before. Despite the abysmal situations they live in, and how easy it would be to turn against each other, the she-wolves of the Wolf’s Den have formed a begrudging, almost sisterly relationship, taking care of each other and keeping each other alive. My language is pretty tame compared to the graffiti in Pompeii's real brothel or even that used by revered Latin love poets like Catullus.
