About this deal

Each round of the game follows the following sequence: Replace Cards, Duel, Play, Move Tacocat, & Place Tile. REPLACE CARDS

Exploding Kittens‘ latest hit is about a tiny, cardboard Tacocat ping-ponging from one side of a game board to the other until it makes it to one of the finish lines. BTW, remember Tacocat? It’s one of the most popular characters from the original Exploding Kittens game, so it’s only fitting that it stars in its own game. The box is the board. It’s kind of a board game/card game combo. You start in the middle of the board and you play each hand. The winner of the hand moves the tacocat piece towards their end. If it’s a tie you move the tacocat piece in the direction of the arrow. Your goal is to get the tacocat down into your winning zone. Tacocat is a game of clever card matchups in a box that is also the board with a cat who is also a taco. Players can win duels by playing cards of matching or higher value to defend their hand (or be forced to sacrifice their lowest card). On the final card, whoever has the lowest value card wins the round, bringing Tacocat closer to their side. First of all, when you unfold the sheet of paper with the rules on it, large letters yell at you to not read the rules but instead go to an instructional video. It’s an element of the game designers which I really enjoy, the subtle humour which gives you a nice giggle when you play. We kept referencing that the day we played it was “Too hot to hoot” whenever it was played.

Play continues until both players have only one card left. They reveal at the same time. The player with the lowest card wins the round. If there is a tie, the tie goes to the player the arrow Tacocat is sat on points to. Tacocat then moves closer to the player who won and a small red tile is played in the space Tacocat has come from. Tacocat can no longer go on that space so when they move in the over direction, they hop over the covered spaces. Once Tacocat has moved, shuffle all cards together and deal a new hand. The game ends when Tacocat is in either players goal space. Final Thoughts The number on the space indicates how many cards will be in the hand. You will deal the cards and you start each round with a duel. You want to try and win the round so that you can set the tone for the next challenge. The highest card wins initial rounds, think War. The winner of the initial duel will then lay down a card and try and force their opponent to sacrifice their lowest cards. If a player is unable to defend (or chooses not to), they must play their lowest card face up to the table. If the opponent sacrifices their lowest card, the same player attaches again.

Last October, Exploding Kittens revealed that it would be publishing a portable party game called A Game of Cat and Mouth - which sees two players attempting to fling balls into their opponent’s side of the box. A dexterity game involving magnetic paw ‘catapults’ and a standee of a cat’s mouth splitting the two sides of the board, A Game of Cat and Mouth was released as soon as it was announced. The box itself opens up to be the gameboard. There are goal spaces on either end of the board. Between goals are seven numbered spaces, and the number on the space determines how many cards are dealt to each player.

After they are finished, their opponent gets to replace up to the same amount. They are not required to replace any cards if they do not want to. For example, if the first player replaces 3 cards, their opponent may replace 0, 1, 2, or 3 cards. The overall goal is to have Tacocat reach your side of the board. Players will duel by playing cards of matching or higher values to defend or sacrifice their lowest card. When you’re on your final card, whoever has the lowest value card wins the round bringing Tacocat closer to their side. Players get the chance to replace cards in their hand at the beginning of each round. Each space on the board has one or two arrows on it. The player with the arrow pointing at them gets to replace cards first. They may choose and discard as many cards as they like. The player is not required to replace any cards. Cards chosen are placed face up in the discard pile. The Tacocat token is what players are trying to move into their goal space. During play, the Tacocat will be moved based on who wins. Now it’s time to decide who goes first – with a duel… TO THE DEATH!! … (-whispers in my ear- What do you mean it’s not to the death?) Each player chooses a card from their hand and places it facedown. Then both players flip their card over together and whomever has the highest card goes first. If there’s a tie, you duel again until there is a winner.
