When I Dream has become extremely popular since its launch in 2018, with many people across all age groups competing against each other to try and be the best in guessing dreams. Individuals such as athletes, actors/actresses, public figures, and game enthusiasts have publicly expressed how much they love playing this game. It has even been featured at major events like Spiel des Jahres in 2019 where it received nominations for Best Game Design. Game Components When I dream is an easy to learn party game for all ages that's full of laughs from the get go. Whether you're the dreamer, a good spirit, or a bad one, each role has its own unique challenges and each time you play is shaped by the extent of your imagination, making every play-through a new experience to remember. They can put the words together in a story format or just list them in a plain ol’ boring fashion. It’s up to the player’s imagination. I always like the idea of these hidden role social deduction games. The general idea is that most of you are working towards a goal or sharing some knowledge while one or two are simply trying to work out what they don't already know without being found out. Yet at the same time, it’s embarrassing to put the blindfold on. Having no idea what’s going on around you is uncomfortable. Especially when playing When I Dream in public. So it creates a barrier to entry for the game, which is something I’m never a fan of.
Likewise, group dynamics established by individual personalities and existing relationships amongst players add further nuance to proceedings. Fairies and dreamers will find anecdotal references to shared experiences particularly useful in boosting each other's scores, whilst boogeymen can disrupt this type of play by subtly twisting words and their associated meanings. Opportunistic sandmen will find themselves having to rapidly switch roles throughout the round as they desperately try to maintain a balance between correct and incorrect elements. This may seem chaotic at first but after a few rounds you’ll realise that the game is at its best once everyone starts to relax and feed off of each other's ideas and energy organically. You can learn how to play in a few minutes and have a great laugh right from the start. Each role is challenging and entertaining giving the game more depth according to the player’s imagination, providing a wonderful experience with a unique dream every round. At the end of the round, the dreamer must use the words he guessed and story-tell his dream for extra points before he opens his eyes.
In When I Dream, every round a player is having a dream, while the other players take the roles of good and naughty spirits. Each round, the good spirits will try to give the dreamer as many elements of the dream as possible, while the naughty spirits try to confuse him. For balance, I should probably mention the parts I would definitely swipe left on. The first thing is the scenarios. In each round of the game, you are supposed to be in a certain place when you find out your crush’s secrets. I don’t think the scenarios add anything to the game, as often they’re irrelevant to the secrets you learn. It doesn’t matter when and how you find out someone voted for Trump, it’s just an automatic pass. It’s a shame that there are so few scorecards as well. I know that you can just reuse, but often erasing the same sheet over and over makes them worn and tatty. It gives the feeling that Dream Crush is around for a good time, not a long time. Swipe Left or Swipe Right? However, you can’t spend too long figuring out who’s who, as you need to be guessing words. Each second you’re not guessing is a potential point going down the drain. This leads to the crucial decision of when to guess, as too soon and you haven’t heard enough truthful information. Too late, and you’re wasting your precious seconds.
Tournaments: Game developers have held international tournaments to encourage avid fans and competitors to play the game in their own area. Players must follow a specific set of rules defined in each tournament; and must adhere to an agreed-upon playing schedule. The winner is determined by who can score the most points across multiple rounds of play. If a player does not follow the above restrictions, move on to the next card and place that dream card in front of that player as a penalty.
A. Night
As you recount the dream, feel free to dramatize your dream. Be inspired by your answers to create a dreamy, funny, zany story... I’ve yet to introduce the game to someone who didn’t like it. It typically offers a wonderful experience for a majority of players and a wide range of age groups. At the beginning of each round, one player takes the role of the Dreamer and covers their eyes with the sleep mask. Games of When I Dream take no time at all to explain. No one’s going to fall asleep (for real) at the table during this!
Overall, Dream Crush is a definite swipe right. The artwork and portraits are an absolute joy, and the way your perception of a person can turn on one piece of information makes for a highly enjoyable game. It does rely on you having the right group of people, but Dream Crush has been such a joy to play. The restriction of one word takes the pressure off the spirits to some extent, although they will still need to think creatively. The dreamer role is the most demanding with memory, deduction and story telling required, but it is not essential for every player to take on this role. Party games do tend to be the marmite of the gaming world. They’re loved by many because they are light on rules but high on entertainment. They are also hated by the board game purists for not being challenging enough. If you are the former rather than the latter, then there’s a lot of fun to be had with this game. I’m Loyal Babes
Object of the Game
Each player will choose a Dreamer card. Dreamer cards list each person’s goals, resources and obstacles they must pass to get to their dream.
One example I’m proud of, but probably shouldn’t be, was when the answer was ‘gorilla’. The fairies threw out words like hairy, monkey, and big. When it came to my turn I said orange, leading the Dreamer to immediately guess ‘orangutan’. Much to my delight, and the dismay of all the furious-looking fairies surrounding the table. When I Dream has been awarded with the People’s Choice Award in Epitrapezio 2016, 3rd best card game in Epitrapezio 2016 and nominated as one of the most Innovative Board Game in BostonFIG 2016. The dreamer scores one point for each correct guess, as well as two extra points if they are able to recount all of the correct dream cards when recounting their dream.Dream spirits continue giving hints in a rotation until the dreamer takes a guess. The dreamer can guess after one word or use the whole sand timer on one dream card if they prefer.
