She is passionate about helping us look beyond behaviour and encourages us to think about the longer term physical and mental benefits that occur when the adults change.

WHEN THE ADULTS CHANGE | Paul Dix

It outlines how, as adults, we can shift routines and develop an appreciation for positive behavior using tactics such as -˜recognition boards' and -˜going above and beyond'. However, on occasions, I do raise my voice and sanction because as you say, if a child can roll their eyes at you or argue back at 7, what will they be like when they are 14? We are now the most improved school in Stoke-on-Trent, in the top 25 per cent of the country for progress, and have gone from special measures to ‘good’ with ‘outstanding’ features. His book When The Adults Change, Everything Changes published in 2017 by Crown House has sold more than 150,000 copies. World-class expertise is hard won over the space of many years of devoted study and practice, and it is characterised by seeing the gaps in things, inhabiting them and getting to know every angle, every nuance of the bits of your subject that no one else has seen fit to investigate.E. Colleges and other organisations since 2003, most recently spending five years as a senior trainer with Pivotal Education. While I believe Dix is correct in encouraging teachers to praise pupils for good behaviours via recognition boards, pupils also have to know that were they ever to tell their boss to ‘fuck off’ they will not be at work the next day, irrespective of their individual circumstances. Throughout her career she has supported adults and young people with a variety of behavioural, cognitive and psychological challenges. g. the focus on positive relationship building, the suggestions for how to build such relationships, the concept of ‘botheredness’ and the use of recognition boards.

As a school leader, the idea of good behaviour stemming from a positive place rather than a fear of punishment not only resonated with my own values but there is much evidence that it is a successful strategy. His appraisal of Behaviour Policies from various schools with whom he has worked, serves to open the reader's eyes to some of the mistakes we can all make when trying to nurture a culture of positive behaviour. Paul has a non-judgemental approach and clearly wants to help solve some of the common behavioural issues found in schools today.

Here chapter by chapter he asks hard hitting questions about school policies and behaviours and shows how these impact on students and often in a very counter- productive way. A bit of everything is needed and people that go on about this book like it is the best thing since sliced bread, I would actually like to compare their school before and after this was released!

Great to see relational learning training is being applied into a practical reminders keyring for our school staff. I am particularly pleased to see his recognition of the wealth of valuable experience and excellent practice that can be found amongst staff who work within the alternative provision sector, who have long been undervalued. It provides newly qualified teachers a tangible way to shape their practice –“keystone tips”, “flipping the script”, and “30-second interventions”, while also being a great reminder to more seasoned practitioners of the fundamentals of human interaction. He is passionate about the importance of building positive relationships to drive outstanding behaviour in adults and children. Dix states: ‘And the world is turning: children are less tolerant of nasty adults and parents demand more than just detention, meetings and exclusion.

Visible consistency with visible kindness allows exceptional behaviour to flourish” This is a genuine must read that can genuinely transform schools and as his many examples show where improved behaviour leads, improved attainment follows. He argues it reinforces negative behaviour, providing a kind of celebrity status for some pupils, and therefore does not help combat the challenges. scripted interventions and approaches which have been tried and tested in a range of contexts, from the most challenging urban comprehensives to the most privileged international schools, behaviour training expert and When the Adults Change director Paul Dix advocates an inclusive approach that is practical, transformative and rippling with respect for staff and learners.

A growing gallery of images from schools using ‘When The Adults Change Everything Changes’ to change their practice. Reading this book is like sitting down and having a coffee and a chat with Paul Dix while he lays out a road map showing you how to avoid pitfalls and transform lives.

The enthusiastic teacher waits at the door while their pupils line up to receive their very own, teacher initiated, personalised handshake. While Dix does not advocate the former, I do believe that it is in the profession’s best interest for such suggestions to be expressed as exactly that: suggestions or ideas. If you want to create an inclusive school where children s behaviour is not only managed, but is changed as well, you should not miss out on reading this book. I’ve been teaching long enough (and been a union rep long enough) to know that if there was a school that relied purely on scripted responses and restorative conversations and behaviour was still poor, you can bet your hidden stash of glue sticks that SLT will blame the teachers. I agree with us meeting and greeting our pupils, but anything beyond a verbal greeting – to me at least – is initiating unnecessary contact with a child.
