About this deal

It also was put simply as out of the blue, “the blue” having signified the sky (or the sea) since the seventeenth century. Set against the backdrop of a society trying to come to grips with the possibility of a world beyond, Out of the Blue is the story of how one unexpected turn of events can put you on a path toward healing. That being the case, overall, 'Out of the Blue' is harmed by events outside of its control and fails to convince in its analysis of its subject. I was concerned at several points that it was going to go one way or the other, which I wouldn't have been happy about, but it ended up being perfect!

What emerges is a book of two parts, the second of which focuses heavily on her seven weeks in prime ministerial office and is essentially a Sunday newspaper long read on acid. Obliviousness isn’t always a blessing in politics however, as becomes clear in her first job as early years minister under David Cameron. This was such a fun twist on a rom-com and seeing such casual non-binary and plus sized rep was a joy. At some point I felt like I was only reading it because it was like a car crash I couldn’t look away from. There is little about her non-work life, except I learned a bit about her slightly mysterious husband, and that her daughter is named Liberty because of her libertarianism. I also thought the fake dating was solid, there was good communication, a well paced shifting from fake to real, and there was definitely chemistry between the characters. The author deals with these issues in a sensitive and compelling way, as the story weaves through Jaya's struggle with understanding her loss by building up this incredibly touching relationship between her and the Being she finds (named Teacake). Five days after Truss announced her resignation, HarperCollins announced a second change in subtitle, this time to The Inside Story of the Unexpected Rise and Rapid Fall of Liz Truss, and moved the publication date forward, to 1 November for the ebook edition and 24 November for the print and audio editions. That's not to say that those two examples of poor judgment are in anyway equivalent as moral issues - but that both could have harmed her political career much more than she actually let them.

I think, if Truss were still Prime Minister, and the events that brought her down never happened, they would have a more successful biography here. I couldn't take any of it seriously and it just made me feel like the characters were even less mature and fleshed out. And Crest uses mer-based language constantly, to the point of it feeling kind of like a Disney Channel original. The book also highlights her polemical nature early on; Charlotte Ivers of The Times wrote in her review that the book seemingly indicated that Truss's "university and school years primarily consisted of starting fights with anyone and everyone she encountered". Truss had hatched a plan to cut childcare costs by slashing the number of adults required to supervise children, which unsurprisingly proved controversial.

Ivers similarly commented that the book explained why Truss's premiership ended so quickly, writing that " Out of the Blue 's strength is in showing the inevitability of its outcome (impressive, considering that most of it was written before said outcome)". A stunning celebration of being yourself and living in ALL the colours of the rainbow, from debut author Robert Tregoning and rising star illustrator Stef Murphy.Having worked in Westminster, I know there are some capable and good people there, despite it being an incredibly volatile and at times toxic environment. And the presentational disasters that befell her premiership were almost certainly exacerbated by the absence of communications people who, as one veteran Tory puts it, “would have been able to warn of a giant train wreck coming”. I like how Crest and Sean kept each other in check when the other did something they shouldn’t have… I think it was one of my favourite things! Relied on a handful of sources, many of whom were predisposed towards her, and yet she still comes across terribly.

And even if Sean isn't training with a year-round team, unless something weird is happening with California high school swimming, he placed third in the state. The ages of the characters (16) and the references they make are very young, (the kind of thing my middle school students would love to read) but the sheer amount of sex jokes and boners in this book makes me incredibly uncomfortable. The portrait is of a politician who just keeps going, determined to deliver what she set out to when she entered politics, and took each bump and scrape in her stride, refusing to quit or back down. It's all about as interesting to me as golf or Formula 1 - despite following politics in a casual way for most of my adulthood. It describes in detail the circumstances that engendered her rise to becoming the most popular cabinet minister among Conservative members, securing sufficient support among the parliamentary party, and finally winning the members’ ballot. While the publication is not an authorised biography, Andrew Anthony with The Guardian speculates that Truss was the source for a substantial amount of the book's information. As a teen I enjoyed when my YA books had sex because it was like wow enlightening, so I can’t really comment on if it’s good or bad (I know there’s been debate). As a fluff story of queer love and diverse lives, I can see this book being something people really enjoy. Written off, mocked and undermined by even her closest colleagues, Liz Truss has slowly but determinedly taken over 10 Downing Street.
