About this deal

These types of books are written for at least two reasons – to discover the undiscovered… yet and to describe unknown facts for the first time. The seamless second side with its instrumental interludes added tension and experimentation to proceedings while Martin Gore’s lyrics possessed an honesty that while dark and deviant, still retained a naïve innocence that many loners could relate to. The status of those shows fell into legend as a result of no officially sanctioned concert footage ever being released. It’s an account of the making of the band’s massively successful and influential album, ‘Violator’, released in March 1990.

David was raised in Castle Douglas in South West Scotland, where the local Woolworths was his source of all things Depeche-related from Enjoy The Silence onwards. The idea to do the “pick up the receiver and I’ll make you a believer” phoneline while you dial this number and it plays the song… in another world, it’s just marketing. They were not a British invasion era Beatles causing a teen frenzy, nor were they at the stage in their career Duran Duran found themselves when they first went to America and were besieged by the teen hordes. The event was broadcast live on KROQ with Richard Blade interviewing the band before the doors opened at 9pm. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Halo' goes behind the scenes of Depeche Mode's 'Violator' era – a biography and oral history from those who were there in the studio, working behind the cameras, producing sleeves, appearing in the videos, support acts, tour managers, publicists and, of course, the fans. With DEPECHE MODE effectively no longer being an electronic band, an upcoming book ‘Halo’ documents that era while projecting a retrospective slant on its influence.

The book features detailed interviews with central figures involved with the band as they transitioned their sound and image to a stadium-friendly aesthetic, as well as those whose trusted contributions, while occasionally understated, were essential for the creation of ‘Violator’, its enduring mystique, sound and success. Everything came together at the same time, such as mainstream crossover, artwork, videos, the tour, and of course, the high quality of the production on Violator.million copies following its release in March 1990, ‘Violator’ gave the cult British band – Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher and Alan Wilder – the critical acclaim they finally deserved. He contributed a blog and that led to his involvement in The Global Spirit Tour Project and, ultimately, to my involvement in Halo. Songs Of Faith And Devotion – the first album of the 90s was on the one hand a departure from Violator, and on the other hand a continuation of this album’s course of departing from the image of sleek three guys behind keyboards and a vocalist running everywhere with a sleek look.
