Stuart, D. (2006). Buddlejas. RHS Plant Collector Guide. Timber Press, Oregon, USA. ISBN 978-0-88192-688-0 Please note that thebutterfly bush, originally imported from China, has been classified as an invasive species in many U.S. states as its known to crowd outnative plants that are essential to wildlife. In warm climates, it can become a noxious weed and spread aggressively, while in cooler climates, it mostly stays contained if gardeners deadhead theflowers.Plant the shrub at the same depth as it was in its original pot. Planting too deeply can result in root and stem rot. Buddleias will grow well of their own accord, so fertiliser isn’t necessarily needed, but planting in a good compost will get them off to a great start. Altland, James (January 2005). Buddleia x alternifolia ‘Argentea’ can reach a height of 3.5 metres (12 feet) and has a lovely weeping habit. It has intensely fragrant pink flowers in July and August and velvety silver leaves. Buddleia shrubs flourish best planted in loose, well-drained soil, so plant them before the frost arrives or after the threat has passed. Once established, buddleia can withstand British winter weather and will begin to grow again in spring. When planting your buddleia, bear in mind the size of the fully grown bush and ensure you leave plenty of space for the plant to grow to its full potential. Can I Plant Buddleia in a Pot? As mentioned above, ensure you have plenty of space in a spot with loose, well-drained soil. Buddleias will flower most when placed in a sunny spot where they can soak up lots of sunlight. Choose a slightly sheltered position, where strong winds won’t harm the long branches. The genus is found in four continents. Over 60 species are native through the New World from the southern United States south to Chile, while many other species are found in the Old World, in Africa, and parts of Asia, but all are absent as natives from Europe and Australasia. The species are divided into three groups based on their floral type: those in the New World are mostly dioecious (occasionally hermaphrodite or trioecious), while those in the Old World are exclusively hermaphrodite with perfect flowers.

Habitats

The most popular cultivated species is Buddleja davidii from central China, named for the French Basque missionary and naturalist Père Armand David. Other common garden species include the aforementioned B. globosa, grown for its strongly honey-scented orange globular inflorescences, and the weeping Buddleja alternifolia. Several interspecific hybrids have been made, notably B. 'Lochinch' ( B. davidii × B. fallowiana) and B. × weyeriana ( B. globosa × B. davidii), the latter a cross between a South American and an Asiatic species. [8] Budleja davidii self-sown along a railroad right-of-way at Düsseldorf, Germany (2016) Once you’ve planted your buddleia shrub, water it well and continue to water it while it grows, however, be careful not to waterlog the soil. Once the plant has matured, water it sparingly. A butterfly bush does not need much moisture, and too much water can be detrimental. Shrubs in the ground are generally not demanding and in most cases, annual feeding with general purpose fertilizer will suffice. Shrubs in containers may need more feeding; usually from early spring until late summer. Take softwood cutting in late spring just as the stems begin to harden up a little. Look for new shoots about six inches in length (15 cm) and trim them below the leaf node and nip out the top.

One of the biggest causes of death in new shrubs is drought stress, so keep it well watered until it’s established. You can choose from a range of flower colours and their shapes range from slender spikes to rounded clusters. Officially named the Buddleia Davidii but more casually referred to as a butterfly bush, the buddleia is a flowering bush which displays floral lance-shaped clusters. The plant is available in shades of white, yellow, pink, red, blue and purple, and gives off a sweet smell which attracts both birds and pollinators including bees and butterflies.
