About this deal

We have found that if you do capture more data with the Revopoint MINI and POP 2 than is necessary, the Revo software sometimes has trouble aligning the data from different rotations. So you’ll want to keep an eye on that. The underlying technology is identical on all three devices, though the MINI opts for a blue light projector for its ability to resist ambient light. It’s also eye and skin safe. Color Scanning The minimum volume, however, is a mere 10x10x10 mm (3/8″ x 3/8″ x 3/8″). This is one of the smallest volumes that we’ve seen from a desktop 3D scanner and is a big advantage if you want to scan small objects. After doing some reading on the Revopoint forum on scanning best practices I plugged my MINI in for the first time and was able to get a decent scan of an object almost right away. I still have a lot of learning to do, and the learning curve is quite steep, but I know that after I use the MINI for a few weeks, getting to know the intricacies of 3D scanning with blue light, I will be able to achieve the results I am after. I will update this review with some more images and detailed review of the MINI after I can utilize it to its full potential.

Unlike many laser-based scanning systems, the MINI is built to work without any positioning targets, meaning accessibility is a priority. The blue light technology powering the machine is also designed to be less sensitive to ambient light so it should capture excellent detail even in highly-lit environments. As far as adjustability goes, you can both tilt the scanning head and extend it upwards through its telescoping feature. Both are nice features to have for scanning the top of larger objects that require the scanner head to be elevated. Lastly, the Revopoint MINI can be used both handheld and in stationary mode mounted on a provided dual-axis stationary scanner with a 30° pitch. The turntable is considerably better than on the POP devices, which helps reduce incomplete scan data and stitching issues by offering a more thorough capture of an object. Altogether, this makes for a neat little box that is easy to store when you are not using the 3D scanner. It also allows you to carry the device with you in an EDC bag without having to worry about it being damaged. Numbers are great, but let’s translate what each one does best. The Revopoint POP and POP 2 are all about versatility with the ability to scan small to medium-sized objects, with the POP 2 taking the lead for overall accuracy and face/body modeling.

FAQ

As we are used to from Revopoint, the device comes with a lot of extras. It’s practically everything you need to get started with the Revopoint MINI 3D scanner. This is to prevent alignment issues between scans, which lead to holes or inaccuracies in the final model. The phone holder is most useful if you want to use the Revo Scan smartphone app in combination with the Revopoint MINI. It’s a simple spring-loaded mount that you can attach to the tripod.

The Revopoint POP 2 retains the user-friendly functionality of the original, borrowing the same dual handheld and stationary modes, while also upping the scan speed to 10 FPS to improve for better point cloud stitching and improved color accuracy thanks to synchronization between the camera and to a high-resolution global RGB exposure sensor. With this technology, the MINI is able to scan at a speed of up to 10 FPS within a capture range of 64 x 118 mm. Revopoint has announced an impressive precision of up to 0.02 mm, and a mesh resolution of up to 0.02 mm (which basically corresponds to the distance between each point in the final mesh). What can you do with the MINI?

Revo Scan 4

The Revopoint POP is an excellent 3D scanner for makers and small businesses in need of an affordable, cost-effective scanner that’s compact, versatile, and can produce scans of objects both large and small.

The Revopoint MINI ships with a trio of software applications. First, Revo scan, the application used for the scanning. Then, Revo studio, a professional-grade model editing program, perfect for more advanced applications. Lastly, Revo Calibration is designed to make calibrating the scanner simple and straightforward. As for file formats, the Revopoint exports to PLY, OBJ, and STL. Fixing scanned STL files in Revo Studio. The Revopoint POP 2 takes the blueprint established with the Revopoint POP and improves it with better precision, improved color capture, and smoother operation. Something that was apparent when I got some hands-on time for my POP 2 review. As the turntable rotates and the Revopoint MINI captures data, you will see a 3D model of the scanned object starting to appear in the Revo Scan software. Revopoint has developed three powerful software for obtaining an even more perfect model: the 3D scanning software Revo Scan, the professional model editing software Revo Studio, and the calibration software Revo Calibration. Each of these software can be utilized at different stages of the scanning process to assist in creating a high-precision 3D scan that captures every inch of detail the user seeks to include.

Software

To achieve this, both scanners use different light wavelengths (blue for the MINI and infrared for the POP 2). They also have different minimum and maximum scanning volumes, with the POP 2 offering a larger scanning area. This is often the tradeoff for the high level of detail that comes with blue light scanning. So if you need to scan larger objects, you’re better off with a different type of 3D scanner, like the Revopoint POP 2 or the Einscan SP. Scanning Precision Revopoint is also releasing a beta update of its Revo Scan software (ex HandyScan software) for both Windows and Mac users. The main novelty of this version is the possibility for users to set the minimum point distance to 0.02mm for a higher level of detail on the resulting mesh. With such a focus on delivering high-quality scans of small objects, the Revopoint MINI is best viewed as a portable industrial-grade scanner ideal for applications such as jewelry design, reverse engineering, industrial part design, 3D measurements, quality control, artifact archiving, coin archiving, and healthcare applications like medical analysis and data gathering. If it is your first time using a 3D scanner, we recommend using the included white statuette that comes with the Revopoint MINI. It is white, so it reflects light well, and it has a nice variety of surface features.
