About this deal

By 1919 the term was being introduced to Britain, as when Mr H D Gaunt's explained the use of 'birdie' and 'eagle' that he met in Canada. For many years, eagle was always introduced as American terms, as in 1922 when Cecil (Cecilia) Leitch described a putt for a 3 on a par-5 hole as 'securing what is known in American golfing parlance as an "eagle"' (Golf XII 1922 p 202). After everyone gets on the green and regardless of the number of strokes, the player closest to the hole gets 3 points, the next player closest to the hole gets 2 points, the next player closest to the hole gets 1 point and the player farthest from the hole gets 0 points. Total the points for all eighteen holes and pay the winner. Foursomes The tournament committee can set pace-of-play guidelines imposing maximum times to play a shot, hole or round. In this case, a first violation brings a one-point penalty; a second violation earns an additional two-point penalty; a third violation results in disqualification. Let’s start simply with the golf terms “par”, “birdie” and “bogey”. All three of these golf terms refer to scoring. As per greensomes, but after both players have driven, you choose the best tee shot and then both players play from that spot with their own ball and complete the hole. Scoring can be done any number of ways, such as using the lowest score per hole or the combined score per hole as the team score. Canadian Foursomes/Pinehurst Foursomes

No prizes for guessing this - just put a premium on this depending on handicaps and the course's difficulty. Dr Doolittle Additionally, handicaps are adjusted depending on the golf course’s rating, or the measure of its difficulty. If you are a casual or avid golfer, the term bogey is not new to you. However, new and beginner golfers should not fear the word bogey. Same format as greensomes, but you choose which ball to play after you and your partner have both played your second shots. American Foursomes For example, if a player is given a shot on a par-4 hole, a score of 5 or lower would win the hole for them.As Homer posts (and I did earlie and will repeat herer) Congu encouraged/required Bogey comps to be made qualifying so the 3/4 (= non-qualifying) and 'no need to hole out' custom was changed/dropped. Like so many things in golf (and elsewhere) mis-understandings result when not everyone is aware of changed procedures. Holing out from off the green without using your putter. Golden ferrets are for holing out from a bunker and count double. Birdies & Eagles

Matchplay game for teams of two where both partners drive and they choose the best drive and then play alternate shots for the rest of hole as in foursomes. For handicap matchplay, take the combined greensomes handicaps of both teams (Lower handicap x 0.6 plus higher handicap x 0.4) and the lower pair gives the full difference. Gruesomes Links” refers to a specific type of golf course and, frequently, the style of golf that is played on those courses (“links golf”). “Links” golf courses are noted for the firm, tightly-mowed grass that covers the course and the naturally undulating and rumpled ground they are built on. In addition, links courses rarely have trees or water hazards , replacing them with deep sand traps known as “pot bunkers”. Links courses are also usually located on ocean coasts, where strong, changing winds play a major factor. That’s a really fancy way of saying it’s ultimately the competition committee’s job to add up the won/lost totals. A player who breaks any rule that carries a maximum per-round penalty must report the violation before turning in his scorecard; otherwise, he’s disqualified. When such a violation is reported, two points are deducted for each hole on which he broke the rule, up to a maximum of four points per round for each rule broken.
