About this deal

My Hamilton Digital Quartz PSR model H5241430 (1970’s PULSAR tribute) was obtained on October 08, 2021, from a local JARED GALLERIA dealer, at a nice discount. The Hamilton PSR appeals to 50 and 60-something nostalgic nerds who recall the fascination of digital watches in the 70s. I bet it’s also worn by tech geeks who snigger at their predecessors’“ancient” technology while secretly lusting after a Patek. Either way, the PSR’s a watch that proves that mechanical watches don’t have sole claim over retro vintage mania. The name, Pulsar, came from the pulsating neutron stars that emit beams of radiation at ultra-precise frequencies.

In the lower right corner of the crystal is a very tiny area which contains the ambient light sensor. The sensor implementation optimizes battery life.Bracelet: The PSR has a Stainless-Steel 24mm (0.945”) bracelet, tapering to 16.0mm (0.630”) at the clasp, and the clasp is the “Butterfly” folding type with a release button on each side. The bracelet appears to be of good engineering and build quality. Crystal: The Sapphire crystal is slightly raised from the case, and flat. It would be nicer if it was curved to fit with the case profile, but in the end, this is really no big deal. The original Pulsar came out in 1970, exactly 50 years ago. To celebrate this anniversary, Hamilton releases the PSR, a remarkable reinterpretation of the iconic ’70s quartz wonder. On the outside, the watch shows a striking resemblance to the vintage model. Inside, however, you find a quartz movement that has been reworked to meet 21st-century expectations. The Hamilton PSR is part of Hamilton’s American Classic Collection and was crafted as a timely reminder of the start of the digital world as well as digital timekeeping. In the same way the Pulsar was popular for its futuristic and statement design, the PSR achieves the epitome of cool.

As Roseanne Roseannadanna said, if it’s not one thing, it’s another. Here, it’s the PSR’s integrated bracelet. More specifically, its butterfly clasp. My first impression: the Hamilton PSR is quite the chunky monkey. I immediately noticed the PSR’s resemblance to Hershey’s nuggets. Sweet! The small, very bright, dot matrix L.E.D.’s is a much nicer choice than would be segmented L.E.D. bars. The dot matrix adds to the retro feel and look of the watch.Timer Module: A quartz timer module runs the digital watch. There is no actual “AM” or “PM” text in the display, but there is a need to set the watch to AM or PM. During setting, as the hours increment, the display changes to 0:00 at midnight. You do not want the watch to display 0:00 at noon; that is just embarrassing. Hamilton's timepiece unites a tough stainless steel case with a silver strap created from stainless steel. Hamilton PSR H52414130 Display Technology: The watch features a hybrid dual display utilizing LCD/OLED technology. [Liquid Crystal Display / Organic Light Emitting Diode.]
