About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I hadn`t expected there to be extracts from this journal throughout, but I really liked that there was and the way that it portrayed life on the front line. She and her grandmother have lost a connection they once shared, and it’s only with the discovery of a box containing Lily’s great-great-grandfather Ernest’s running logs that they start to bond once more. Best-selling author Tom Palmer has a track record of bringing together his passions for sport and history in popular stories with a high appeal in primary schools. I love how Lily learns that she shares her fitness, speed and eye for navigation over tough terrain with her great-greatgrandfather.

Among the papers Lily discovers detailed diaries from Ernest’s time as a soldier in the First World War. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. This story will pull on your heartstrings, but it also makes the history and experiences of soldiers during WWI more accessible, understandable, and easily digestible for teenagers. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. He has written three series for Puffin Books - Football Academy (7+), Foul Play (9+) and The Squad (9+) - and several books for Barrington Stoke, including Armistice Runner and After the War, both of which have been nominated for the Carnegie Medal. In my opinion, this book didn’t have a strong plot line and it all led up to a very anti-climactic ending. As she works through the diary, events at her gran’s house cause her to pause between reading different parts of Ernest’s story. Will she discover what happened to grandfather in the great world war and work out why he stopped running? The book ends with Lily winning a race as her great-great-grandfather had also done before he went off to fight/be a messenger for WW1.

Moving away from the past into the present, there is something both sad and beautiful about Lily’s experience of reconnecting with her grandmother. When she gets there, she comes across an old journal that her great-great grandfather, who was also a fell runner, kept during his time as a soldier in the first world war, which allows her to connect with her grandmother about running and also find wisdom that relates to her own life within its pages.I think this was a great fit for history books and children’s books because it wasn’t all about the World War, it was about Lily’s feelings and running. Trading Address (Warehouse) Unit E, Vulcan Business Complex, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EB. An amazing story that my students and I thoroughly enjoyed - tears at the end, but tears of understanding and appreciation of a topic not often covered in such a lovely way. The part of the story that stands out the most is Ernest’s diary entries to his departed brother, Fred. Palmer has skilfully woven in a modern story of a young girl, also a fell runner, who is a descendent of the World War 1 soldier.

The atmosphere and setting of World War Two Russia are brought vividly to life through Anastasia: she’s a young woman full of hope and dreams, yet entirely a product of her country.Lily's Nan isn't well but when Lily talks about fell running Nan becomes animated and send Lily's dad to the loft for a box. But she reconnects with her Gran when she finds her great great grandfather's diaries who also was a runner. It’s utterly compelling – a pacy tribute to the athleticism and bravery of men such as Ernest Dalzell, fell-runner extraordinaire and soldier. When her family visit her grandparents, she discovers the running diaries of her great-great-grandfather. There are lots of books set in the first world war, but this one is unusual because it links it very much with the present, and you learn far more about the logistics of war and how the war was ended, then you do about the actual fighting.

Lily has a great-great-grandfather who took part in the World War, she discovers that he wrote diaries when he was in the War and decided to read them. The character I found most interesting was Lily because she was resilient even though the times when her gran was in her weakest and toughest times. Overall, I think this book is a great read with accurate and interesting facts relevant to the time period. Tom's scrapbooks are always fascinating, full of photographs, notes and snippets of history that inspire his books, and this one is no different!I would recommend this book to anyone that likes stories with other stories hidden in them and also people that like emotional stories.
