About this deal

Ishizuka's page-turner applies the gung-ho spirit of action manga to an unlikely subject: jazz music. If I had to compare it to anything I guess I would recite the works of Asano Inio (Oyasumi Pun pun guy).

The early pages of the manga focussed on Dai’s discovery of music as a small-town boy in Sendai, and his tribulations as he scrimped and saved to be able to afford a saxophone in the first place.

When I first moved to Tokyo, I tried to overextend myself, thinking: ‘I mustn’t lose to the people from Tokyo! There are scenes in Blue Giant where the animation leaps from scrappy, impressionistic hand-drawn 2D, to ToonShaded computer animation, to full-on 3DCG and back again. An absorbing manga that wonderfully transcribes the phases of musical learning, but also the passion for jazz and the surpassing of oneself. The art is above average, the character designs are non-inspiring, and the story is just a cliche came-of-age tale. Si eres aficionado al saxo, al jazz o a la música en general, y al cómic, simplemente no puedes perdértelo.

A high school 3rd year student, Miyamoto Dai, whose heart was touched by Jazz, continued to play the Saxophone alone in Kawahara, rain or shine, day or night, for many years. Blue Giant tells the story of Dai Miyamoto, a high school student who lives alone with his father and sister, works part-time at a gas station, and has recently developed a passion for jazz. It ranked 41st on the 2018 "Book of the Year" list by Da Vinci magazine, and ranked 45th on the 2019 list. Although he can come across as being naive for how optimistic he is, it's that same quality that I think a lot of people can sympathize with. A third series, titled Blue Giant Explorer, was serialized in Big Comic from May 25, 2020, [14] [15] to May 10, 2023. Dai decides to move to Tokyo after graduating from high school to become a saxophone player, and invites the patrons of the jazz bar who yelled at him on the first stage before coming to Tokyo to listen to his current performance.

He has no skills, no formal training, and no idea what he's up against, but his obsession drives him to play that instrument day after day.The story is punctuated by short flashbacks explaining Dai's love of jazz, and references to giants such as Bill Evans, Charlie Parker or Miles Davis. It is directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, based on a screenplay by Number 8, with character design by Yūichi Takahashi (who also served as director of animation) and original music and soundtrack by Hiromi Uehara.
