If you often forget doses, it may help to set an alarm to remind you. You could also ask your pharmacist for advice on other ways to help you remember to take your medicine. What if I take too much? And when buying loratadine, make sure the product you buy only contains loratadine, because some products combine loratadine with a decongestant (such as Claritin-D) which can cause side effects in dogs such as a rapid heart rate and pulse and anxiety in a dog and possibly worsen the allergic condition you are trying to treat. Bodyweight 30 kg or less: The 10 mg strength tablet is not appropriate in children with a body weight less than 30 kg. Human histamine skin wheal studies following a single 10mg dose has shown that the antihistamine effects are seen within 1-3 hours reaching a peak at 8-12 hours and lasting in excess of 24 hours. There was no evidence of tolerance to this effect after 28 days of dosing with loratadine. In healthy subjects, plasma distribution half-lives of loratadine and its active metabolite are approximately 1 and 2 hours, respectively. Loratadine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

Approximately 200 paediatric subjects (6 to 12 years of age) with seasonal allergic rhinitis received doses of loratadine syrup up to 10mg once daily in controlled clinical trials. In another study, 60 paediatric subjects (2 to 5 years of age) received 5mg of loratadine syrup once daily. No unexpected adverse events were observed. If you or your child have been prescribed loratadine, follow your doctor's instructions about how and when to take it. A child's dose is based on age and some forms of loratadine are not for use in children younger than 6 years old. Carefully follow the dosing instructions provided with this medicine. After oral administration, loratadine is rapidly and well absorbed and undergoes an extensive first pass metabolism, mainly by CYP3A4 and CYP2D6. The major metabolite – desloratadine (DL) – is pharmacologically active and responsible for a large part of the clinical effect. Loratadine and DL achieve maximum plasma concentrations (T max) between 1-1.5 hours and 1.5-3.7 hours after administration, respectively. Loratadine liquid may be easier for children to take than tablets. The medicine will come with a plastic syringe or spoon to help you measure out the right dose. If you do not have a syringe or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. Do not use a kitchen teaspoon as it will not measure the right amount. When to take itLoratadine has no significant H2-receptor activity. It does not inhibit norepinephrine uptake and has practically no influence on cardiovascular function or on intrinsic cardiac pacemaker activity. Claritin syrup is preserved in propylene glycol and should not be used in cats. Oral disintegrating loratadine tablets (also called "orodispersible" tablets) may contain xylitol, a sweetener which is toxic to dogs and should not be used in dogs. References Among these subjects (12 years and older), 1000 subjects with CIU were enrolled in placebo controlled studies. A once daily 10mg dose of loratadine was superior to placebo in the management of CIU as demonstrated by the reduction of associated itching, erythema and hives. In these studies the incidence of somnolence with loratadine was similar to placebo.

Remember, keep this and all other medicines out of the reach of children, never share your medicines with others, and use loratadine only for the indication prescribed. For children over 2 years of age and who weigh less than 30 kg a syrup form of this medicine may be more suitable. Loratadine is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, hay fever, itching, and other cold or allergy symptoms. During long-term treatment there were no clinically significant changes in vital signs, laboratory test values, physical examinations or electrocardiograms. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to loratadine: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Elimination Route

Loratadine, the active ingredient in Loratadine 10 mg Tablets, is a tricyclic antihistamine with selective, peripheral H1-receptor activity. Loratadine is highly bound (97% to 99%) and its active metabolite desloratadine (DL) moderately bound (73% to 76%) to plasma proteins. The usual dose of loratadine for dogs to relieve allergies is 0.12 mg/lb to 0.22 mg/lb (0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg). For example, a 20lb (9kg) dachshund would require 4mg of loratadine but a German Shepherd weighing 60lbs (27kg) would require approximately 12mg of loratadine. You should always talk to your veterinarian first about the dosage before you administer it to your dog.
