In the last essay of the collection, Chew-Bose sits on the front porch of her parents’ home, listening to the sounds of her mother and father inside cooking dinner—utensils slide in a drawer, the fridge opens and closes. The initial struggles are interesting as both Martha and Naomi are strong and know what they want in life, Martha desperately wants a baby whilst Naomi is concerned how her children will react to meeting her new boyfriend. As a woman the same age as Naomi, it’s she I feel the greatest empathy for, and I must admit that at first I did not take to Martha at all.
I’ve been reading Erica James novels for over 20 years – hers were the first adult books I ever read, and her books are always fun and enjoyable.
