With so many different types of compost to choose from, sometimes it can be a little difficult to know which is the right compost to buy for your plants. The best way to think of it is by breaking it down into the life cycle of a plant. Seeds and seedlings

What is it made of?
As well as those mentioned above there are other specialist composts for plants with special tastes. Including: A multi-purpose premium potting compost, this is rich in nutrients and has great water retention, making it ideal for thirsty pots and planters. Look for composts with slow-release granules as these can better control the speed at which they lose nutrients . There’s a range of peat-free compost on the market, although some gardeners feel they are not as effective as composts containing peat. Peat-free compost generally contain wood-based materials such as wood fibre, sawdust or bark. Garden compost is very nutrient rich, and as such it’s not ideal to use it on its own in pots and containers. Too much compost in a container could damage and even kill your plants.
Suitable to use for up to six weeks, this compost retains water well and doesn’t get too compacted. It contains a combination of recycled materials to help with aeration, although it seems that the quality of these materials can vary. There may be wood, stones, and ceramic included, amongst other materials. These are used to improve aeration and drainage in heavy clay soil and add body to light sandy soil to help retain moisture and nutrients. It also boosts the soil fertility by adding nutrients to encourage healthy foliage, flowers and root growth. Many manufacturers are attempting to lower the peat content in their compost, due to its negative impact on the environment. However, if the compost doesn’t state that it’s ‘peat free compost’ or at least ‘low in peat’, you should presume that it has a high peat content. When choosing the best compost for garden containers, it’s important to also understand the difference between garden compost and potting compost. Always research the correct compost before growing new types of carnivorous plants – the wrong potting mix is probably the main reason that people experience failures when they start growing carnivorous plants. What are the different types of John Innes used for?
As you would expect from a multi-purpose compost it has many uses around the garden from taking cuttings to planting up containers and hanging baskets It's suitable for most seeds, cuttings, indoor and outdoor plants The 15 litre bag is ideal for use around the garden for flowers and vegetables A lot of gardeners find 50 L bags a lot more manageable, although of course they may not offer such good value for money. Overall, it’s one of the best composts to use if you’re after value for money. It’s a good quality product, in a size that’s easy to manage, and you still get a lot for the price.
Take the plant out of the pot, and gently remove any loose compost without damaging the roots. Repot the plant using fresh compost, and water thoroughly. Using compost helps improve the condition of the soil, and help with pH i mbalances. It also works to maintain moisture levels and boost the general health of plants. Peat free compost is the replacement for peat and will often contain a mix of more fibrous material ingredients including: Loam - Loam is the most important ingredient in all John Innes compost, supplying the main body of the compost. The loam supplies the nutrition needed for the base of the plant, which helps to absorb and release plant nutrients as required. The loam also contains micro-elements and organic matter, which provides a slow release of Nitrogen to the plant.
