About this deal

My absolute favorite, which was also what I had seen in person at the museum, is Yoshizawa’s self-portrait in origami. The panorama presented a wide diversity of scenes from Japanese country life in a landscape filled with birds, animals and country people and with cranes flying above. I was able to make only a few of them, mostly the simpler ones, but still I enjoyed looking through the more complex ones, too. It was in these years that he came up with a system of notation based on a series of symbols and graphic signs indicating various types of folds and thus created a method that was later adopted by many origami artists and is still in use today. Fortunately, because of the convention of symbols for folding instructions that Yoshizawa himself introduced, his books can be understood and enjoyed by all folders notwithstanding all barriers of language.

hb, 8vo, NF/NF, 66p, clean and mark-free copy, japanese text with 6p english translation laid loose. In recent years, she has organized various exhibitions abroad to help the broad public understand Yoshizawa's works even better. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions. I was asked to sign the visitors' book, the first entry not in Japanese, and then I had my first sight of the exhibition, being first confronted by two large flying dragons and a large and impressive model of Godzilla. There were two exceptions to this: the small display of models by the overseas folders who had been invited to the exhibition when it took place in Tokyo, and an Antarctic scene in which penguins folded by members of the public during a lesson in origami had been added to Yoshizawa's more advanced models.

This beautiful book is the fi rst comprehensive survey of the extraordinary work of Akira Yoshizawa. He has strong views about the nature of folding and in particular holds that paperfolding should be something more than merely a geometrical and technical accomplishment. In addition, much of his work is “wet-folded”, a technique where you use thicker paper but dampen it, allowing for infinately subtle folding nuances.Disclaimer: Etsy assumes no responsibility for the accuracy, labelling, or content of sellers' listings and products. It was followed closely by his founding of the International Origami Centre in Tokyo in 1954, when he was 43.
