The book ended with Cloud Wolf promising Twig that he would never abandon him again, and the sky pirates setting off for Undertown. It becomes a very real and frightening place to the reader, told in such a vivid way that you can just imagine every piece of it. After fleeing from a halitoad, Twig encountered a young slaughterer named Gristle Tatum, being attacked by a hover-worm.

There is a very neat ending which simultaneously ties up the loose ends of this book and sets the scene for the sequel. The next morning, Twig is woken by a slaughterer who tells him that he has outstayed his welcome, and is expected to leave immediately, which he does. When Cloud Wolf realized this, he was emotionally tortured by the thought, and left while Twig was sleeping. So begins an adventure that will take Twig through a nightmare world of goblins and trogs, bloodthirsty beasts and flesh-eating trees. As the series has progressed, with prequels and sequels, the life histories of the various characters have become more deeply described.
