But I think the reason why this book is so hyped is because it benefits from the ‘sensationalism’ of having two young girls murder a baby. It definitely does not sit well with me and it left me feeling uneasy but I suppose that's what the author's intention was.
The tension throughout is palpable, and there is an undertone of pure dread because of the nature of the crime, which never really dissipates.The Flower Girls is what the media dubbed sisters Laurel (10) and Primrose (6) after they went on trial for the murder of a child who went missing. The Flower Girls is a disturbing but strangely compelling story and I’ll be interested to see what Alice Clark-Platts does next. The ending didn’t come as a surprise and the twist I thought would happen kind of petered out at the end! By framing The Flower Girls’ story within the present-day missing child case, Alice Clark-Platt shows the raw emotions of everyone involved in the immediate aftermath of a child’s disappearance, how the situation evolves with every passing minute she remains unaccounted for, together with the longer term impact on those involved in such a polarising case. The characters became devices rather than fleshed out characters and because there’s some unreliable narrators involved I actually felt a little cheated with purposeful misdirection. I am over the moon with these packs, I bought 25 for all the children at my wedding and it was so easy. Two sisters, who back in 1997, were involved in a truly horrific crime - the torture and murder of a two year old girl. The sort of book that is easy to pick up and get lost in for an hour here and there or a book you can read straight through as it is only 350 pages long.This is purely my opinion and having read other reviews since I finished the book, I’m sure it’s a case of “it’s not you.
