Funeral for a Dog veered wildly from the entertaining to the profound to reading like someone's tiresome dream sequence. Funeral for a Dog won the prestigious Uwe-Johnson Prize, and critics raved: Pletzinger's debut is a real smash hit. Mandelkern's time there also serves another purpose, as much of his story is reflection on his (obviously) complex relationship with his wife Elizabeth. I pushed through because Oscar had a penchant for beautiful things and I figured if it was worthy of gifting, there must be something about it.The performances are good, all the technical work is too, song choices, beautiful camera work of the Italian lakes where the bulk of the present day story takes place - but once the conclusion was reached, my overwhelming thought was that at half the length it would have been twice the show. It is in the present day story (dated titles), narrated by Daniel Mandelkern, that this manuscript is discovered. In contrast to Sebald’s writing, however, there is a great deal of beer-drinking and a great deal of blood. Hannah’s love of literature and music means she encourages readings and songs and is also happy to incorporate religion and spirituality if it offers comfort to those bereaved.
