About this deal

To me, the mandarin comes on strong but quickly takes a back seat to the vetiver and red pepper then settles into a woodsy, incense kind of scent.

The opening is actually really promising and pleasant - woody and boozy with a slightly sweet zesty mandarin note, very pleasing.

If only we could get a “old” vs “new” smelling scale on fragrantica just as we have “feminine” vs “masculine.

The dry down is pretty rapid, about an hour, and although not particularly interesting (I didn't detect even a hint of the alleged vetiver) it's nonetheless quite pleasant. You feel the ozonic cucumbery freshness you get from the violet leaf and you sense a little bit of smoke that adds some complexity and contrast to the freshness.

This is the energy this fragrance gives off – it is elegant, but understated - clearly very masculine, but also well put-together. They both open up pretty fresh, with Gentlemen Only being slightly more so, but that's where the similarities end. Gentlemen Only It has a very sober woody touch, in fact it seems me a serious fragrance to go to work in a suit and tie. After half an hour I get lots of pepper mixed with a vetiver-y vibe, which turns smokier into something incense-like, but very faintly in the background.

There is nothing like this outside the Givenchy line and this is a very uplifting and pleasant fragrance all the way through the opening onto the dry down. Today was the first really warm day of the year, but I'm in an office and not moving around much so I'm hoping that as it gets hotter and I'm more active in the coming months that the scent will come alive. What I was thinking when this dried down was that it actually reminded me of a warm weather version of Tom Ford's Ombre Leather, the violet leaf has a similar effect and it has a similar sort of smell, but it's more airy and fresh. Good for office, spritz lightly, it IS a heavy fragrance; especially wearable for FALL/WINTER, cold months, but since I love heavy colognes, I will wear this year round. Violet, cedar, birch leaf and nutmeg nestled in patchouli done beautifully (the swirling incense and beautiful musk only add more depth to this scent). In 1975 Hubert De Givenchy broke with traditional men`s fragrance conventions by combining cologne and lavender scents to create Givenchy Gentleman ? He is greeted by a sea sweaters, suits, and blazers - all in muted browns, greys, and charcoal blacks – with the occasional flash of pastel purple and French blue dotting the otherwise uniform white of his numerous collared shirts.

As it dries down , pepper and orange part ways and it just becomes a clean woody (vetiver) and slightly smoky (incense) scent. To learn about our personal data protection practices, and to exercise your rights please read our Personal Data and Cookies Policy. However, courtesy (for it was a gift) required some semblance of use; It has been this occasional "enforced" use that has lead me to conclude, over time, that Gentlemen Only may well have been rushed [conjecture] but truly this is a very clever scent - an air of simplicity that belies a complexity.
