The Glenkinchie label was relatively little known until 1989, when United Distillers started marketing it under their Classic Malts brand.
Though it is based some 15 miles or so from the Scottish capital, the whisky is branded as “The Edinburgh Malt” and the distillery actually put on a regular minibus from the city centre to take tourists, punters and whisky-nerds alike to visit the site [ed: the visitor centre is currently undergoing a large refurb, with an intended launch date in May 2020!After opening up with a drop of water, a complex sweetness, like toffee came through - moreso than the tamadhu 12, which I felt was of a less complex sweetness but felt it was less complex than the Glen Scotia's salted caramel feel. Glenkinchie is the gentle Lowland destination on a journey around Scotlands six malt whisky making regions. The wash still (for first distillation) has a capacity of 30,000 litres, which is around double the size of a typical wash still in the industry. A fantastic introduction to the region, Glenkinchie 12 Year Old shows off the characteristic lightness and grassy elements that Lowland whiskies are known for, with nods to cooked fruit and Sauternes wine along the way.
