About this deal

Yet Anne Fine presents us with a problem that is recognizable even in the first quarter of the 21st century. One thing I particularly liked was the fact that Gerald isn't portrayed as the stereotypical 'evil' stepdad, as is so often the case in children's fiction. So it’s no surprise that she’s the one chosen to sort out classmate Helly, who’s gone into meltdown. Hours later, I glance in the mirror and can’t help but notice the faint goggle-induced circles under my eyes.

There's also a somewhat saucy rhyme that Gerald relays to Jude to use as a school project for her teacher, while in one scene early in episode 4 when Kitty and Helly try to persuade a group of schoolgirls to vacate their regular meeting place to continue their story, they are told in no uncertain terms to "piss off! If you’re practicing starts, tighten them for that and then loosen them back up when you resume regular swim sets. I read this on the recommendation of a YouTuber as it was listed as a book you could read in one sitting and described as laugh out loud hilarious. She takes against him due to his politics, his age, and his pinickety behaviour, such as his habit of turning off the lights to preserve energy - the irony being that they share much of the same environmental concerns without realizing it. Try a higher-quality brand at night and a less expensive one before swimming, so you won’t feel so bad when it washes off in the pool.Alexandra Milman (who seemed to be in everything in the 1990's) also shines in the smaller (but important) role of Helly, whose own situation is the trigger for the story.

Witty and thought-provoking, this book demonstrates Anne Fine’s genius for dialogue and for observing the quirkiness of daily life. Kitty decides to share her story about old Goggle-eyes - possibly one of the worst episodes in her life. It’s also interesting that the story transcends the time in which it was set around the nuclear warfare debate and remains relevant now. If you're not of a liberal, left wing mindset then you may find yourself agitated by the arguments put forth for CND. Kitty begins to see Gerald in a new light, and these scenes are touching as she finally begins to thaw towards him.

If you want to see how good children's drama used to be, you'll find few better ones to start with than Goggle Eyes. The story seems simple: kid from a broken family, mother's new boyfriend, and no way everyone is going to get along.
