About this deal

I read this book with an increasing sense of dread – there’s no happy ending to a story such as this. A second screen adaptation has been released in April 2023 as a four-part limited series for Netflix, under the title Obsession. In his seventh outing, Burke, Vachss's flinty ex-con and relentless crusader for abused kids last featured in Sacrifice , is still reeling after having killed a kid in a previous case gone sour. When the unnamed narrator, a reputable physician and rising MP, meets mysterious, compelling Anna Barton, ``the shock of recognition passed through my body like a powerful current.

In addition, cool, self-confident Anna warns that she was irreparably damaged by her brother's suicide: ``Damaged people are dangerous. A production of The Vortex, of which I was the producer, was still running in the West End and I was planning a another, of Iris Murdoch's The Black Prince. This book cannot be considered on a morality spectrum about the failings of the 20th century London ruling elite. And to watch those trapped by genius forced to sacrifice themselves, and those trapped by talent to emulate them. There are so many themes and analogies in this book, it’s difficult to know where to begin… Actually, can you move past the fact that Stephen is sleeping with his son’s girlfriend?

Chilling and brilliant, Damage is a New York Times bestselling masterpiece of the romantic suspense genre. But his life lacks passion, and his aching emptiness drives him to an all-consuming, and ultimately catastrophic, relationship with his son’s fiancée. One can visualise it as if it were a long fox-tail she wore elegantly and defiantly through all her adult life. On a superficial level this might be about a moment of falling in love, but it is a lot deeper than that. In the final scene, the MP, stripped of his political office and living abroad as a recluse, sits in his solitary room staring at oversized photographs of Anna and Martyn on the wall.

Josephine Hart might have been frightened by this force, this much she admitted in her 2011 introduction to the book, which was finished some 20 years earlier in 1990. But done well, with the pastry crisp and the fish moist (a delicate balancing act, much like the picture above), it is delicious. Just then the MP is casually introduced to his grown-up son's enigmatic girlfriend Anna and helplessly falls for her. She was a Director of Haymarket Publishing and founded Gallery Poets before going on to produce a number of West End plays. He will always be Freddy Honeychurch in Room with a View for me (yes, I know he has been in dozens of things since Room but I’ve avoided those other things and the character of Martyn is just all wrong for Freddy.
