Scoring in Mantis is a great feeling – a real “Yesss” moment if you have built up a solid collection of a colour and your rainbow comes through for you. On their turn, players look at the top card of the draw pile to decide whether to score all the cards matching that top card within their own hands, or to steal the matching cards from an opponent of their choice.

Velonimo was a good example of a game that is small, easy to teach, and enjoyable for all player types. There’s not really a way to come back from a major point deficit unless you get extremely lucky, but I also think that’s this kind of game, at its core, so you do have to take it or leave it. Though, sometimes, it’s worth leaving a player with an exposed Tank so that another player can Steal from them. If they don’t have any cards to STEAL in that colour, they get the card added to their own area (again to be scored later or STOLEN!
Even though the cards in the draw pile are faced down, the back of the cards have colourful clues as to what is on the other side.
This means that you can Steal multiple times in a row, or you can chain a Steal into a Score (and potentially lock in the cards that you stole). Try to collect matching sets of cards faster than your opponents while simultaneously ducking, dodging, and throwing squishy airborne burritos.No explicit player count preference, but I’m most likely to play this game at four or fewer players. In fact, we have started playing a variant where we play until the deck runs out just to see who can score and STEAL the most rainbows in total! With the simplicity of UNO and the depth of Gin Rummy, it’s one of the card games for families that should be part of any collection.
